CLunking after SHImmed LSD

I am about to drop the rear end again to find out what is going on with the s4 clutch type lsd that i shimmed using aluminum shims. After taking to the track for a drift event, im experiencing a slight clunk when shifting gears or as i relieve load and get back on the throttle. its a mild clunk but i feel like it needs attention before i damage the insides to the point where i cant rebuild it. any pointers would help, and if all else fails..... welded T2 diff.

Hmm that's odd.

I shimmed my NA diff over a year ago and it doesn't make a sound.

Did you place the diff back in the housing in the exact way that it was before you removed it?
It wouldn't have to be off by much to start clunking.

I'm guessing either some of the bolts backed out a bit or you killed your front diff mount.

+1

Also check your U-joints. When my driveshaft was bad it would clunk going on power, off power, or shifting up or down.

did you check your diff mount to make sure it hasn't broken? i know you have the modified version but anything can still break.

If you put to many shims in it, it might be 100% locked like a welded diff would be. Too much preload causes the clutches to lock all the time.

If that is the case, it probably isnt the diff clunking at all. When the diff is permanently locked the stress goes elsewhere. I've seen(on an s13) semi new bushings that looked like they had 15 years of abuse put on them After a few months! Hahaha

But it doesn't chirp when making tight turns like a fully locked welded diff does... Plus when I took It to the track it had a weak *** bite compared to the realizably locked welded diff

Then front diff mount seems likely..

Just jack it up and check it.

One question, have you modified the Diff mounts in any way? I have a friend who flipped his (makes them more rigid) and his clunks very hard when shifting or when the throttle is jammed..

his front mount is welded solid but the subframe ear could have broken off.

Actually I did flip the rear mounts over for the solid feel I don't really think that it could be this I will inspect tonight, because it does happen when shifting it does downs feel like a broken front mount, a less noticeable clunk

That is what's causing the clunk.

At least you know nothings broken ehh?

my friend just got used to it, and if he shifts smoothly it doesn't clunk at all.

lesson learned, no shortcuts to solid rear diff mounts noted.
