Cluncking sound on braking??

I have a pretty heavy clunking sound when I apply the brakes. Sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car. Car must be in motions for it to happen. I do not hear it if the car is sitting still and I press the brakes. I have not looked at anything back there yet. Just fishing for some suggestions to maybe point me in the right direction before I get started. I am pretty familiar with first gen. cars but this is my first FC. Appreciate any help

I have a similar sound i the front of my car. It occurs during breaking(weight transition) and when I turn the wheel to an extreme degree.

I am thinking it is a suspension problem like a bad bushing.

happens to me sometimes too, I always thought it was the piston sticking for a while in the caliper bore during light braking, but the car never seemed to be "adding another brake" when I'd hear it during slowdown, and the front never pulled to one side either (mine sounds like front)...I guess it could be the pads slamming into the caliper "fingers", I dunno...as long as it doesn't affect performance, I'm not really that worried about it...

Check for loose brake calipers and pads. Also loose steering components can be also the issue.

ABS will probably produce a hydraulic "clunk" because of the solenoids interrupting flow- kinda like the water pipe hammer sound...Digi7ech might be on to something- it could be ball joints, etc...

Mine clunks as well but is not abs. I don't think it is the brakes though. It clunks every time on braking right before it comes to a complete halt. No other ill effects just irritating. I thought it must be a suspension component also. Can anyone enlighten us please?

I don't have ABS on my car.

I have tried to figure out exactly when mine clunks.

It comes from the drivers front fender well.
It happens when the car is stationary and I turn the wheel to the limits(EX: pulling out of parking space)

It also clunks/clack a bit when the body weight transfers during braking. It will usually only do it once during this process. Never a continous clunkclunkclunk....

pretty much just fgure out exactly when it does and doesn't do it.
Then look for what moves during those times.

That's why I am thinking suspension in my case.
