clicking sound (not alternator)

(s5 n/a)

ok im about 9k into a rebuild, this has been happening before the rebuild, and after.

there is a clicking noise, that increases speed with rpm increase, never goes away. i thought it was the alternator bearings, but today i took the belt off of it and started it up for a second, still the same noise.

i tried the old mechanics stethescope method, and didnt hear anything clicking INSIDE the engine.

when standing in front of the car, it seems to be coming from the right (drivers side). this takes the injectors out of the question.

really what this leaves is ignition. (i THINK) ...

im using racing beat's ULTRA wires, stock coils, and ngk plugs (the 9's leading and trailing)

could it be that i am just hearing my spark? its pretty loud, i can hear it from about 20 feet away.

i just put brand new plugs in to see if that was the problem, but it still happens. also there is no visible arcing at night.

could it be anything besides ignition? anyone else have this problem? anyone FIX it?

thanks!

Hmm... increases with RPM on the drivers side. If it's not a rattle but a constant clicking, mabey the FAN or bearing in the A/C or Power Steering pump? If you take the belts off and spin the A/C or power steering pump by hand does it click.

Does the fan-clutch click at all, when cold does the fan spin 1/2-3/4 of a turn before stopping when cold?

The fan clutch only bumps up the fan's RPMs when ideling or driving at very low RPMs. It's controlled by an internal thermostat inside the fan clutch housing in the front of the fan.

I'm just wondering if the fan is rubbing on the fan shrowd?

i was thinking that too. the exhaust is sealed up beautifully, i checked that first, and re-gasketed.

anyway, the header is on the passenger side, sound is on the driver side.

there COULD be a problem with the fan clutch, my fan is always on... what would cause that? and no its not hitting the shroud :/

Start it up, then rev it to 5k and shut the car off. Does it still click while spinning down? I think that would be a good way to isolate if it's something in the pulleys and spinning stuff (like fans, flywheel, etc) or if it's electrical.

If the fan clutch goes bad, metal flakes can wedge themselves between the clutch & the fan housing. That will make your fan spin up a VERY HIGH RPMS on the highway.

By "never goes off", I assume you mean the belt driven OEM fan. It will always spin, but if it's always spinning at HIGH RPMS then it's time for a new one.

it actually sounds like its coming from the front cover?! s5 has an electric omp right? when i put my hand on the top of the CAS i can feel it clicking faintly... as if its lower than that, and the cas is touching whatever clicks... RRGH this is aggravating. rev'd to 5k, shut off, ticks slow down as everything slows down.

Maybe you could find where the wires go to it and jump them with some power to turn the pump on. Im not a S5 guy though.
