city driving question

This is kinda wierd but i have been driving my rx7 for a while and as of recently i was wonder if it was better for me to cruise around town 35-40mph in 4th gear versus 5th. when i look at my AFRS it runs richer in 5th. When i run in 4th gear i afr goes up 2.0 points but the revs go up 500rpm.. soooo? my s2000 has me spoiled i run around in 6th gear all day long

Cruise in whatever gear you and the car are most comfortable in. AFR doesn't mean squat.

hahaha i get shitty mileage in my car im nickeling and diming every ounce of gas.... my car is like that fat ugly wife... undesirable features but you still love her. it eats gas im getting jealous of the piston engine turboed cars they dont suffer MPG like i do and some are faster. im running 750-860 at 50lbs .......

35-40mph in 5th is lugging the engine at low revs, hence the richer mixture. Surely it feels better in 4th at that speed? I have no idea why you'd be in 5th...

I don't put it in 5th unless I'm going 50+. 50 is also an odd cutoff. I'm getting up there in the 4th gear RPM's but at the same time 5th chugs along at 50. Depending on the road, traffic, etc. I usually stay in 4th until 55.

I too have wondered this.. becuase I figured the lower I kept the rpms the better.. But according to my mpg datasheet.. with my car something must be broke it doesn't matter how I drive it. It still get 10-12mpg unless on highway then it gets a random number above 14 but below 18 except I did get 23 once.

I'm trying something new now I don't go to fifth unless going 55+.

I based my shifting (before it became automatic) on how much work I thought my engine was doing. Lower rpm's aren't always good. Sure 30mph in 5th will net you low rpm's (1k? or something), but your engine will have to do a lot of work just to keep going.

You can also pay attention to the shift up light. It's pretty smart when it comes to that kind of stuff.
