cigarette lighter is not putin out! argh.

my cigarette lighter isnt putting out nearly enough voltage. i have a gps and its not charging it. what would be the best way to rewire the stock unit to do so. or which wire would be the best wire to run to it?

anyone ever had this problem?

hate to bump so early but, i should phrase the question better. what would be the best switched 12v source for the lighter? and once i find this source, can i just add it to the line going to the lighter terminal? or should i splice it out.

thanks and goodnight!!!

how much voltage are you getting?

If you're getting some voltage, but not 12 volts, try sanding the connection with some sand paper or a small file, see if that helps.

Also, check to see if the wires connected to the clip that goes into the cigarette lighter is properly connected, if not, just re-solder the wire.

good luck

Run the wire supplying 12V to the cigarette lighter directly to the accessory wire on the ignition harness (10 gauge? blue wire on my 88 T2)

With a multimeter, and the car on check to see that you have 12V coming through those two wires that connect to the lighter. if you do, reconnect the lighter and check to see that you don't get any drop through the lighter itself, touch the black lead to the small metal dot (thingy) in the back of the lighter, and touch the red lead anywhere on the outside. If you read any drops, you may need to get a new lighter. Or if you don't have any power through the wires, you may need to rewire.

Oh and check your fuse for the lighter while you're at it...
