Cherry red exhaust? help!
Hi all,
The other day I was coming home from work, stopped and got gas, pulled out of the gas station. was going through the gears not getting on it or anything. between 3rd and 4th my 89 RX-7 backfired and lost 70% power. I drove it another 10 miles home. When I pulled into the drive I thought I saw a spark so I stopped and looked under the car and my exhaust was glowing red all the way back to and including the mufflers. Glad it didn't blow up. I haven't tryed to start it sence then. I had a friend who bought a used RX-7 and his exhaust turned cherry red when he ran it. I talked to him and he never did get it fixed so no help there in finding out what the cause. The gauges were all reading normal.
Thanks for any info on what the prob is and how to fix,

Hi Teo, The best thing you can do now is a compression check. The reason the exaust gets so hot is you have severe blow by. Which in most cases is from a bad apex seal from either the front or rear roter. If you have a shop manual it will explain how to do this. This should be your first step before you do anything else. It's not to difficult and you can di it yourself. Been there did that. If you need some more info I'll try to help. Gary
