Checking neutral and 5th gear switch

I recently replaced the thermo sensor switch on my rx7 (the one under the alternator) and have found it has improved starting immensly and fuel consumption (but not as much as I thought).

I am wanting to check whether my 5th gear and neutral switches working. Is there any way to check these switches from under the bonnet as there are currently no garage spots at home (Dad is repairing damage to his RX2 - he hit a tree stump) to get under the car. Aparently it may have a different gearbox in there (previous owner) and I am not sure if they reconnected it properly.

I understand that this may affect fuel economy in 5th if these aren't working.

The other question is can I wire in a incabin switch instead if it turns out I cannot wire in the 5th gear switch (or it isn't even there)? Sort of a power/economy switch or will that damage the engine if I forget to turn it off in lower gears.

BTW - it is a 86 S4 manual Australian model if that makes a difference.
