Check your stock seats!

Man, I can't believe that the stock seat broke like this.
This happened a few days ago, and I thought the slider broke or the bolt came off.
This is what I found after I pulled the driver's seat out...

The pic is of the stock seat from my 1987 Turbo II.
The chunk tore out of the stock seat base, not the slider...

Welding

Looks like you've got some welding in your future. Another thing that breaks at the weld is the support in the seat bottom bolsters. Another welding exercise.

Just like my experience with the seatbelt ripping out of the pillar when I was only going 15-20mph. What if that seat ripped appart like that in a more serious situation.

wow, that's different. as for trying to fix it, I wouldn't. there maybe other stress fractures elsewhere. maybe a better idea just to replace with a nice race seat.

Any of the other sections look bad or was it just that one? Hopefully the seatbelt would catch ya during braking or whatever if it came all the way loose but that extra weight or how the seat might twist and turn under you would suck!

I was actually in an accident in a civic where the seat broke. The driver hit a pole doing a high rate of speed and the seat ripped out and twisted pinning my legs by the ankles(i was sitting behind the driver).

And like a said "Turbo II" I wouldnt count on the stock seatbelts if I were you. Well atleast not s5's.

Yeah I know about the seatbelts, I had my drivers one come off track on the last run I made at Deals Gap this year. They decided at the dealership to fix both of them for me, under warranty of course.

Did it just come off track or did it come comeltely out of the pillar?

Just the gray wire that runs the clip back and forth came off track. Ended up with about 18" or so hanging out. Could push the clip back and forth through the track fine up to a certain point one way or the other. At least I'm guessing the clip was still on track. Didn't feel like you could have pulled it out of the railing or track or whatever it's called. Took them about 90 mins or so to do each side. Both move alot faster now.

My seatbelt broke when I got in my accident too. There are only two little round peg like pieces of metal holding that belt clip to the track. Very cheap and not safe.

My actual mounting point on the track broke in my T2. Not sure why. Swapped the track out of my parts car. Racing Seats in the not to distant future.

Yeah, I'm 6'1" and 250# right now.
I'm a fat ****! :P

The car does run on stiff springs - 400F / 275R.
I dunno if that has anything to do with it?

I don't do anything unusual in the driver's seat - sorry, NO SEX in the car!
Car gets jealous and starts dying on you! :P
Hell, I can't even fit a petite Asian chick on top of me in the driver's seat!

I got no warning.
The seat didn't flex at all prior to failing.
It just popped the front left corner one day last week.

No, the car was never in a major accident.
Slid the car into a ditch trying to drift in the mountains at very low speed.
Slid the car into the bushes at the same mountain - fricken flowers all over the road from the tree overhead - scratched front bumper.
I got rear-ended at a stop, but it was relatively slow again.
I got side-swiped making a left turn (not my fault) at slow speed again.
So nothing major...

I swapped in an S5 NA seat, and a looked at the area where the old seat failed.
The stamping looks really SKETCHY!
There is a high rise stress ridge right in that corner from the stamping process.
If you slip your seat over, it's really obvious - the failure was right on that ridge.
Kinda scary...

I just wanted to post this, cause I know a lot of you race with your stock seats.
I was planning on going with a race seat soon, so this failure wasn't that big of a deal.
I'm kinda glad the slider didn't fail - aftermarket seats can use the stock sliders sometimes.

the 4 mounting holes broke at different times. I was gonna get a new slider but I just ended up welding.
