.
Well instead of a dyno tune you could record all the data on a track and then tune the car...... ... ...

Sorry I was having delusions of someone else's bank account

Dude honestly, WHY in the hell do you need a laptop in your car? Do you realize that by the time you install a haltech, any possible gains will be countered by that 50 pound weight laying on your 50 pound base that's attached to your 30 pound robotic-looking arm that's attached to a 15 pound laptop?

Wouldnt it be easier to tune your car whenever you need to like normal people?

I'm not bashing your "invention", it's quite unique, and I like it, i just don't see it as being practical. And if I ever see someone playing solitaire on the highway and swerving, I'll run them off the road, pull em out and shove that laptop where the sun don't shine.
Well I believe it only weighs in the neighboorhood of 35#s, since I am no longer an n/a guy I can justify the weight gains, Whats 35#s vs a 200# passenger??

Tuning almost never ends! Most guys just datalog then correct their maps afterwards. My car is running and I am tuning it right now.. Its so nice vs having to pull over and put my laptop on my lap...
I do not have the privilege of having friends who know how to tune, so tuning on the road, which MOST ppl do, is almost impossible for me...
Its also nice to see the engine data page as I drive, things like Air intake temps etc...
It won't be in my car 24/7, hence having no brackets!

That's absurd! By the looks of him (and I don't mean any offense), he doesnt look like he'll be tuning it, or installing the Haltech himself. Certainly not often enough to have the laptop semi-permanently installed, and certainly not often enough to do it on the fly while driving LOL

To extract reliable numbers from a datalog while on a track for tuning purposes wouldn't work out too well. Too many conditions in a relatively uncontrolled environment

Whereas on a dyno, you control every condition, excluding humidity :P

haha. looks can be very decieving! I have installed the entire haltech myself, and as soon as I get a wideband o2 I will do some real tuning, not just vacuum.
Dyno is not realistic, hot air intake temps, no useage of fmic( I am about to start building one)... A lot of guys blow their engines because they tune to their perfect a/f on the dyno then get out on the street then lean out...
Bet you don't believe I did the t2 conversion myself, paid for, and built this entire car myslef too?

well, it could also be used for 'drive-by hackings' like my friends do just find a company using a wireless network by pinging them down using a pringles can and some screws (don't ask me how they do it... but they do) and then hop aboard, download their information and use their ideas (as long as it's not copyrighted or anything).... it's not illegal since they're broadcasting it and you're not altering anything

Cool, that gives me ideas.

I have been using the old hold it down w/ the pillow technique

Large pillow stuffed in passenger footwell, laptop leaning against it.

Driving, tapping away on the up and down keys, keeping an eye on the road and the A/F meter takes a lot of work. I can handle it for low speed diveability tuning, but there is no way I'm tuning the top of 5th w/ out a dyno!

Nice mount. Having a laptop computer in the car for tuning purposes is very handy, and laptops don't weigh more than 10 pounds max (even the large desktop replacements with 15 or 16 inch screens, maybe 10-12 at most).

For tuning a Haltech or other standalone Fuel Maqnagement System, you only need a computer with a floppy drive, serial port, keyboard, mouse, and screen. It doesn't have to be a powerful multimedia machine, nor large. You can get a subnotebook that weighs under 5 pounds for around 1000-1500 that'll do the job very well. Or buy a used one for even less.

For MP3s, a laptop does the job just as well. I mounted my old laptop behind the passenger seat on top of the storage bin lid with subwoofer straps and 4-coax splitters to raise the laptop off the lid and help with air circulation. I controlled with a simple control pad consisting of nothing more than a lid with buttons scavenged off an old Sony Discman, a length of telephone cord, a spare DB9 connector, and a piece of freeware that controlled Winamp. It worked great and I didn't have to lug around 100 CDs. Be sure to ground the metal chassis to the body ground. Once again, you can buy a used one, at least a Pentium II with 64MB, Win98 or Linux, and Winamp, and it'll do a great job of playing MP3s.

I would suggest that you, the driver, refrain from watching DVDs or GPS navigation while driving though. Laptop screens may or may not perform well in direct sunlight and it can be a dangerous distraction during driving. I almost ended up in a head-on when I tested out my laptop in the car for the first time. Setup your laptop ahead of time and use a remote or control pad and not the keyboard or touchpad.

Well if that's a pic of your actual car, I must say I'm rather impressed. Except your air filter straight on the turbo, i'd have to disagree with that. You're sucking in 160 degree air. For what? To defeat a split second lag?

Anyways, sweet car, and impressive know-how... or you got a SHITLOAD of time on your hands LOL

You think that a pair of subs can be held down by velcro during a hard brake? Or how about an accident when they decapitate you?

I got a touch screen lcd and a computer mounted in a briefcase(800PIII, 120GBHDD, 768MBRAM) all ready to go, just never wanted to put it into a car that I trust it not to walk out of.... The whole thing is badass.

It looks pretty good for temp use. I've been trying to find a way to mount via the rear and have a swingline to the front. Haven't quite gotten it yet though, works great if the pass seat was laid all the way back. I've been running linuxas my mp3 box for a few weeks now. I have my old 333mhz k6 strapped under he driverside seat. Give it a static ip, and some openware software that interfaces linamp to a http protocol. Than I use my 2ghz HP to connect to connect to the protocol and select the playlist. I also have a full VNC that makes changing settings super easy.

I have tried for a few weeks to get halwin to work under linux. Its been a pain, i can't get it to confirgure correctly with whine or winlix. I might be stuck having to make the permentnant laptop back to windows, or more prefebly windows nt.
Great job though

...cept the picture
