the reason hid retrofits/kits are illegal is because they do not have a fillament. if you aim your headlight correctly and have a clean cut off they are the same as any other hid. pporly installed kits are what can blind other drivers.

Yes on the initial start up of a hid system it uses more since it has to ignite the gas. But once there on it takes less amps to run. Thats why when you see a HID system cut on they flicker. This is about one second that it draws that much current.
Also there are good kits and there are bad kits and then there are the completly fake kits.
A good kit like mine have the bulb positoned the same place as a regular H4 bulb so that it acts just like the low beam on the H4s.
Also when you install them you will have to re aim them, usually just a little lower than regular lights.

more than likely those are fake in the avatar

Personally I would never put HID's into a car with only one bulb per side, because you lose your high beam. Even though they're brigher, HID's are still only low-beams, so they're not focussed for long range like high-beams are. The high-beam on a high quality (i.e. not stock...) housing and bulb will have longer range than an HID.

A good compromise on this is the Silverstar sealed beam lamps, which drop right in to replace your normal halogens, and you keep your high beam ability. They have a nice high color temp, so the light is really white and bright, and they're not too expensive. Also, you don't put any of your hard earned dollars into APC's coffers.

Well it doesn't bother me not having a high beam sincei have never had the need to use them with the HIDs, that shine far enough for me.

If I ever did another retorfit I would make sure to use a projector as they offer a better beam pattern.
