Check out my custom intake box.
Made this sucker with sheet metal, duct tape, foam, snips, and cardboard for a template.
I have noticed a huge difference when the car is warmed up. The normal power loss from "heat soak" is gone. Great way to get some more power out of your car for very little money.
It seals up with the hood everywhere except right above the stock inlet. I plan on sealing that up soon. The fresh-air headlight cover is now very functional.

Wait a second... Isn't the s4 MAF mechanical and it uses gravity? So having it on it's side or upside down would be bad?
Can someone chime in on this?

Yes that is true but when I intalled our prototype Cold Air Intake I had the AFM i place like that. I don't think there is REAL BAD problems that come of it but it still should NOT be like that.

You may not notice the difference from mounting your AFM the wrong way, but that doesn't mean it isn't having any effect. The flap is now influenced by gravity, where is wasn't before, so it's output will be affected.
If you mount it like 13bpower has (damping chamber upwards) then gravity will be pulling the flap closed, so it will measure less air than it would normally and the mixtures will be leaner. It may not be much, but it will be there. On a stock or mildly modded engine this may actually be of some benefit (stock full-load mixtures are quite rich), but on a more highly tuned engine it could be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
Mounting it the other way (damping chamber downwards) will be pulling the flap open, so it will measure more air than it would normally and the mixtures will be richer. On a stock or mildly modded engine this would be pointless and detrimental to performance, but on a more highly tuned engine it might give a little more headroom at the expense of some power.
More importantly I would think, big bumps in the road can cause the flap to bounce up and down. This could cause the engine to stumble or stutter as the mixtures fluctuate rapidly. You may be experiecing this and not realise why, blaming something else instead.
There are obvious packaging advantages to mounting the AFM vertically, so it's safe to assume that if manufacturers have never taken advantage of this then there must be a pretty good reason why not.

I didn't read the whole thread but I'll ask anyway. Did you remove the weather trim, at the back of the Headlight Cover? Or atleast cut out the contour that the air passes through the opening of the slot? You will not get the full "performance" effect of the Head Light Cover If not done. I ask b'c I did this setup prior to going - East Bear Style!
