Cheap But Accurate Way to Measure Intake Air Temps?

As much as I'd like to have a bunch of nice gauges, I don't really feel like spending that kind of money on the FC nor do I want to give away the sleeper look.

Is there a reliable, cheap, accurate way to measure the IAT through a simple digital readout that I could put in the glove box and look at it occassionally when I'm interested?

Thanks.

Real ghetto but maybe you can try dissambling a cooking or health digital thermometer. Mount the probe in the intake box and then run the wires from the probe into the cabin.

Yea...

There are "Indoor/Outdoor" digital thermometers. They have an outdoor sensor on a wire that can be run out a window or such.

Where do you want to run the sensor? The problem with running something like this into the throttle body inlet area or such is that if the sensor does break off, it's a small hard object being ingested into the engine. It will *probably* get tossed out... but it could also do a lot of damage.

The safest place to put the sensor would be before the air filter, but then you won't get the readout from the heating of the air in the inlet snorkel & such.

The problem with those is they don't update very fast.

Go to frys/comp usa/ computer shop and get a digital lcd temp probe. Its $20 max and has a 4ft length of wire with a little sensor on the end. Simply place the sensor where ever you want and have the read out inside the car some where. Its a 2x1x.5 deep box for the screen, I use them and have a spare around here somewhere. Good to F or C.

If the sensor on the car is in good shape, you can watch the voltage input at the ECU pin. The FSM gives voltage values for particular temps, all you have to do is use a little algebra and interpolate the temps from the voltages you recieve. This will also check out the sensor for normal operation...

I've done this a couple of times over the years for the couple of temp related sensor inputs...
