charging problems

ive been using a FD alternator on my FC (rebuilt) and im barley see it charge at idle. i have no AC, stock radio, & HIDs.

sometimes during nightime it drops as far as 11.8v and when driving barely gets to 12.8v

during the day it doesnt even idle at 13v.

i have a wire running from the battery + to the alterantor (+ post on top.)

then on the connector on the alternator i have a wire running from the bottom to the s(?) 2 wire connector on the orginal s4 harness. i THINK the wire is brown,

then a wire running from the top connector on the alternator back to the alternator + post.

anything wrong?

what i did with that was run my own wires from male part of connector to female and just bore out the ring connector to fight properly on the wider diameter stud.... chargin wise it worked perfectly, i would have taken pics had i not re-replaced it back to stock because the aftermarket pulley kept blowing the belt of of it from all the heat....warning do not buy pulley from banzaitoyota, hes a jerk and his pulleys overheat and break belts i almost lost my car because of that damn pulley

Look directly at the alternator and where the plug attaches to it. The plug has a locking device that holds it on to the alternator and you can see on the Alt where that locking device attaches to the alternator. I'm saying there is a NOTCH just above the two blades.

So look at that notch. The blade below and just to the LEFT of the notch is the blade that gets a constant 12dc from the battery. You cannot get that power from the original series four plug. Not allowed because its a switched source of power.

Below the notch and to the RIGHT, is the blade that will have a wire attached to it that feeds the Warning Light cluster (indirectly). On your old series four plug there is a WHITE wire with a BLACK stripe. You connect that wire to the alt blade on the RIGHT of the notch.

That won't help you. Your alternator is busted and no matter how you attach the wires on the small plug it won't make it better. Try anyway. Won't work though. Just make sure if you put another series four or five alt on you series four, that the blade to the left gets a contant, 24hrs a day source of batt power. The blade to the right of the notch goes to the WHITE/BLACK wire on the series four alt plug.

There is NO brown wire on the alt plug. There is a BLACK/WHITE wire and a WHITE/BLACK wire on a series four car. Wire colors are different on the series five.

Here. I found this picture. There's better jpg's out there somewhere, but you can see what I'm talking about. You can see the NOTCH for the mounting of the plug and the two blades below it.

http://forum.teamfc3s.org/attachment...7&d=1083896963

I know it shows a series four and five, but the six's alt plug is the same as the five. A notch at the top for locking the plug on, and then two blades below the notch. The one to the left is constant 12vdc and the other goes to the Warning Light Cluster, or in your case, on a series four it goes to the alt relay in the CPU then to the Warning Light Cluster.

Your alternator is toast. When you put another series five/six on, you MUST install the small plugs wires as shown in the diagram in the attachment or it will also go south in a matter of days like you present one.

The alternator is trashed. I've never done it, but they say if you take the alt to PEpboys or such, they can confirm one or more of the diodes is kaput. Low voltage is a sign of it being kaput. Even if you noticed the small wires were backwards and corrected them, it wouldn't help to arrange them where they should go because the alt would be kaput by then and it wouldn't have helped. Bad is bad. New alt required.
