Changing Wiper Switch this weekend, any advice

I just got the totally rebuilt wiper switch from Ice Mark and will be installing it this weekend to replace the original that has only one speed left on it. Any suggestions or things I should be aware of when I do this? I have already reviewed the Haynes Manual for the 2 gen RX7.

Just be careful with the older plastic.

I generally recommend that you unscrew the steering column surround (4 screws from the bottom) remove the keyhole trim ring.

Then you have three screws across the top underside of the gauge cluster surround, and one in each bottom corner (for a total of 5 screws on the cluster surround).

Then pull the cluster surround forward enough to reach behind and unplug the light switch, the turn signal switch, the wiper switch, and if equipped the cruise control switch.

I recommend at this point that you test the new, repaired, or rebuilt wiper switch. Plug it into the wiper plug that you just removed from the old switch. With the ignition key on, the switch should control everything just fine as they have been tested both on the bench and in a car before shipping, but this gives you a double chance to check and will save you trouble if something did happen during shipping.

If everything works fine, unplug the new switch and then finish the replacement by then sliding the cluster surround out. In some cars it is easier to just remove the steering wheel and pull the cluster surround out that way.

Once the cluster surround is out, then you can remove the screw from the top and bottom of the wiper switch, and the screws that hold in the cruise control switch (or its blank panel if you don't have cruise).

Pull the wiper switch ***** off, remove the cruise switch or cruise switch panel. Then remove the wiper switch. Sometimes the body of the wiper switch will catch on the large **** hole for the wiper switch, but you will have to carefully pull the plastic enough to get the wiper switch out.

Mount the new switch, and re-install everything in the opposite order that you removed it all.

Thanks for the advice. The old plastic was my biggest concern since I have replaceed the defroster grills on the top of the dash. They were extremely brittle. I'll do this very slow and with a lot of patience. Thanks again.

Mark, here is one for you...

What would cause the fuse for my rear wiper to blow, it works for a while then the next time I try to use it the fuse pops.

Suggested points to check?
