Changing tranny fluid I heard is bad?

I overheard a couple guys at work talking about not changing tranny fluid, in tranny's because it messes up the synrchos or some ****? Is this true with our trannys?

This is the first I have heard of that. I don't believe it to be true.If I was a syncro I would like new synthetic fluid compared to 15- 20 year old fluid.

That's only if you have an auto. You don't want to replace the fluid in an auto with generally around 60k or more if it has never been changed before because the freash fluid will pull the varnish from the old fluid off of all the lil orffices and clog em up.

Oh okay so it only applies for autos. Now I understand. At first when I heard them say that I thought they were smoking crack for lunch.

lol nope, just for autos... think about it... Manual trannys don't even have filters...99.9% anyways...

Still a good idea to change it regularly but not so much as an auto. An auto tranny runs off of fluid pressure to engage the clutches/bands which has a lot of friction/heat, causing break down of the fluid. Where as on a Manual the clutch is almost external from the tranny itself and has no lubrication except for the sealed throughout bearing. Manual trannys have gears and synchros only, which do generate a lil bit of heat/friction. But, the fluid keeps the wear, tear, and heat down. ( and to lube the bearings)

Also, The fluid in a manual tranny is much thicker. 80-90w in ours I believe

The previous owner of my '86 Rx7 (manual) lived by that "motto" and ruined the tranny with in a few months before I bought the car.. put Redline heavy duty gear oil for problematic transmissions and drove the car from south Cali to WA w/o any issues (just lots of horrible grinding sounds from bad bearings). Made the car driveable for the trip, upon arriving I immediatly junked that tranny and put in a turbo ii tranny.. I highly reccomend Redline oil products for transmissions and diffs.
