changing belts....NEED A LITTLE HELP

BTW, I was already a member of the forum but I decided to change my name and dedicate it to the 787 B Le Mans race car with the four rotor. Wow that race car kicks a$$.

The other day while driving my 90 GXL and my alternator belt snapped....this really sucks. Now my car just sits in my garage....its dying.

What is the easiest way to change the alternator belt? I gotta change this thing because it runs the water pump and the car will overheat if I drive before changing it.

The belt has already been wrapped around the fan and two other belts have been taken off to get the alternator belt on and the other belts are being put back on but its getting kind of tough.

How exactly do the two other belts go and how tight should they be? Also do the bolts on the alternator have to be loosened so the it can but pushed up to tighten the alternator belt? How does that work?

Anyone ever done this sort of thing before?

Also is this possibly why all my idiot cluster lights (low oil, add coolant, brake, low fuel, etc) all came on because my belt broke?

please give me some help and ideas

chris

yes all the lights come one when the alternator is not working. you need to losen the bolts on the alternater so you can push up to tighted the new belt. you will probably have to take the fan off to get the belts over. it's 4 nuts, not hard. when the belts are on you hould be able to push down about 1/2" on the longest side. that's how you know if they are tight enough.

You can walk the belt around each blade of the fan to avoid taking it off.

BTW if you still have the smog pump belt on, the car won't overheat. The battery will just die, and leave you stranded
