change of plans.. recieved 87 s4 tII for free! going to swap

How about that, my first post. Well i'm here in northern Indiana where it feels like i’m the only person who knows what these d*** rotary engines are. It's a shame more people aren’t familiar with these but it also makes it interesting at the same time, knowing I acquire knowledge the average person doesn't have "what the.. No pistons?" i’m sure i’m not the only one who gets that reply a lot. Are there any rotary owners out there south bend/ ft Wayne area? there about has to be but I haven’t seen many rx7s other than my own (other than the ones rusting away in peoples yards... hill jacks) Anyway I have been searching this forum and acquiring a ton of information from all of you and I thank you all for your input/debates/ elementary arguments.. lol j/k

Now, to the point. It started about 1 a year ago. I purchased a 2nd gen 86 N/A rx7 (no mods besides k&n air filter and no cats) off of my friend, it was in great shape body wise that is. I bought it from him before I had much knowledge of the rotary engine, he wanted what I now realize is a ridiculous price of 3000K which I lowered him to 2700 still not enough I see.. And I realized that after I found out why that adds coolant light never went away lol. Appeared to have blown water seals which recently I found out yes that was the case.

After winter came I parked it because I had dreaded driving that thing in snow since day 1. I have acquired the money to rebuild the engine when my ex g/f started talking to me again and brought up her dads 87 turboII, well I ended up meeting this guy and he gave me a look at that car and I asked him what eh wanted for it, he to my surprise said take it its yours, thinking he was joking I said ha-ha I wish, but he wasn’t. I went home with that car the next day, it was in bad shape but the drive train and engine are all intact and in good condition, my father and 1 scraped the car because of extensive rust and kept the parts that are in good shame (very few) last week we finally got around to the tear down of the engine process after purchasing Atkins rebuild video, one of the housings was gouged and same with the rotor in that housing. We thought we hit a road block till I came up with the idea of using the one god tII housing (the rear) and one of the good housings from the engine in my car at the time hoping that the housings were good in it... so we tore down the N/A the next day. So here I am I have 2 good housings in spec and no scratches ext. and 2 N/A rotors also in spec. i've decided to do the conversion and use the N/A rotors in these housings (which I had to swap exhaust sleeves between the bad tII housing and the good N/A). That’s where we are at this point.

NOW i’m about to order the master rebuild kit from Atkins for the turbo engines and substitute those d*** 3mm apex seals for the 2mm does anyone disagree with anything I am doing so far? I'm not turning this engine into a performance car just a street driven stock form (besides the N/A rotor factor) can for now. I’m aware of the boost factor and watching how much I use without an aftermarket ecu, but i’m not going to worry about that because ill be running stock boost just running a little rich to compensate for the higher compression. In you opinion should I instead of substitute the 3mm apex seals from Atkins for the 2mm.... should I order the master kit and not use their apex seals and just for ra apex seas because they are less expensive? I went to Mazda and they want 130$ for each apex seal? Does this make sense to be that expensive or was the moron parts manager just that... a moron. Because he did not know what an apex seal was at first when I asked him which is WRONG for him to be employed there

by the way ill have pics of the progress soon

Buy them from Atkins Rotary or Rotary Aviation, just a good if not better.

Edit : The apex seals.

Also I know what you feel like being the only one for miles interested in these engines, it is a shame really that more people didn't get a chance to get to appreciate the smooth power they put out.

Welcome to the club. I live around Mooresville, which is 13 miles S.W. of Indy. 7's must cost more here, I paid $3200 for an '89 vert w/89,000 miles, in good shape. I hope I never have to get into mine as much as you're doing, but sounds like you and your Dad have a good handle on it. Good Luck!
