Catalytic converter questions
I am looking into possibly getting my cats replaced as my car has the stock exhaust system still in it.
So far the only aftermarket cats that I have looked at are Magnaflow's Car Sound line but I am confused as hell on what I need. They have front, middle, and rear converters as well as a "Direct Fit converter (not California legal)" for FC's.
I am trying to get the car back up to OEM spec, so no using no cats is not an option for me. Do I need the 3 cats or just the direct fit unit?
Are there any other alternatives when it comes to catalytic converters?

the stock FC had 2 cats.... pre cat that is usally replaced with a downpipe and is usually not required.even for SMOG
the main cat needs to have the air pump attached if you are going to have it replaced so look for a cat with an air injectiion port. on the side.
you want an oval 1 too since a round cat wil nt fit really well.

I purchased the cheapest cat setup I could find (around $160) which was a direct bolt-on replacement without the pre-cat. It worked perfectly and i passed CO smog with it. Cheap is good.

I thought there were three cats stock on a '88 SE. But I also see that the year & make were excluded from the question. My problem was that the stock "replacement" was like a couple $$$$ dollars. I ended up with RB RoadRace system. & haven't been sorry for the $$$$ it cost. There wasn't any giant increase in HP(unless your cats are clogged, in which case the car will barely run). I did notice faster revving from 5-7k rpms's & a much more pleasant sound. I love the polished look & tone. Good Luck!!

mr_vaughn: Is that for the Turbo II FC's or N/A's? I am running N/A so I don't quite know the differences.
Parastie: What cat are you using? How strict is passing smog over in CO versus TX?
ramses666: I do plan to get an Racing Beat "True Dual" system if my exhaust is rotted out. Are you running a turbo or N/A FC?
