Catalytic Converter Heating Up and Smoking

When I bought the TII. It had a new cat converter but did not have a split air pipe hooked up to it, it justs dangles there. It drove fine the first couple months and I didn't think much of it.

Then Recently past week or so I've been pushing the car harder staying in Boost for longer periods of time. And after stopping one time I noticed there was smoke coming from under my car and it was coming off the cat and I thought it was a plastic bag or puddle of water had gotten on it. Then I read that it is necessary to have the Split Air Pipe hooked up to it. So I boosted it around for a little bit again tonight same thing smoke coming off the catalytic converter and where the shielding for the cat is turning black like its burned.

Also when I boost my temps start to get higher. Usually it stays at 1/4 while cruising but when i go into boost it goes up to half then i cruise again and it goes down or if I turn the heater on.

If the split air pipe is not hooked up can it cause the cat to clog up resulting in it heating up and higher temp readings? It recently start doing this about a week ago. And I got the car back in late october when it was running pretty good and cool.

Also the temp does not go up if do not enter boost and the cat will not smoke.

Thanks in advance for any help

Your cat is fried!!!!!!

Buy a new one or get a new exhaust system which will lead to having to do more work!!

I already have a corksport 3in dp and a corksport catback. Im probally gonna call the muffler shop 2mrw to see how much its going to cost to have a high flow cat put in and the split air pipe hooked up.

Because with the way it looks now. It doesn't seem like the split air pipe is gonna be able to reach all the way to the cat. So sounds like muffler shop is going to fabricate a longer pipe to it can hook up.

YOu have to buy a special cat that can withstand heat. Try racing beat or mazdatrix.com

Give rx7.com a call and find out what you need. I know that you will somehow have to match it up to your 3inch downpipe and cat bach exhaust.

If you buy the bonez I'm sure your local shop could make it work with your exhuast system.
