Catalytic converter
I have to get my cats replaced, but i'm kinda broke right now. What would happen if i had a straight pipe welded from the header to the "Y" pipe? I'd put the cats back in later for smog of course, but what can I expect to happen? Would the exhaust be louder?
I'm not looking for power gains or a better exhaust note. I just need to get to work :P
If anyone's curious, the cats are clogged as hell and have to go.

What kind of headers are on your car? I have a raciing beat header with a straight pipe to the Y, and at idle and cruise its fine, but when you get on the gas at all it gets really loud quick! If you have a stock manifold it wouldnt be as loud.

Switching from cats to presilencer was already much louder for me. I would imagine a straight pipe to be tons louder. Would it be easier to weld up ends to a straight pipe and bolt it in instead for easier switching?

Stock headers. It'd be stock header straight to "Y" pipe. I talked to the guy and we're working something out. Thanks much for replying.

I think your idea will work fine, straight pipe it. And as usual when you see a cop, just coast by. When you have some extra cash throw a bonez high flow cat into the mix. Thats what im doing anyways!

My 88 had gutted cats from the stock Manifold ..all the way back to the Y-pipe..The cat(gutted) had the split air hooked up still and the Ports worked fine..so Yes your MOD will work fine..(and it sounds good!..stock cans on)..the exhaust will smell like Fuel though now..(since you are not "filtering the exhaust"..No catalytic..)
