Catalytic Converter

I tried doing a search but couldn't really find the info I'm looking for. I just bought an '88 na and the cat has a rust hole in it. Well I need to get it emissions tested so I was planning on getting a high flow universal cat and having an exhaust shop weld it in. Now I'm wondering if I can just use any cat because rotarys run hot and burn oil so I'm thinking that a regular universal cat will get gunked up or melted out pretty quick. So basically I'm looking for a reccomendation for a cat (cheaper the better so no OEM) Also it's the cat that's just before the y-pipe.

Try this

This thread has info that will help you with the entire process, including a part number for a fine replacement cat.

Thanks for the link $120 for a universal cat seems steep, I picked up a 2.5" inlet/outlet carsound highflow cat a years ago for ~$70 I'm just wondering if any universal cat will withstand the heat. I think Magnaflow markets their cats in canada under the carsound name, I checked ebay for magnaflow cats and the box looks identical to the carsound one.

You can do what i did, and just google for a bolt on replacement. I picked up a bolt on to replace all the cats for $150 I think. Worked out nicely and i passed emissions in Colorado with it.

Just buy a Bonez cat and have something that'll last for a long time.

That's just me.

Any other cats will get burnt threw pretty quickly.

I think Bonez makes a race pipe that will bolt on. Otherwise if you have connections at a muffler shop just get them to weld one on, that's what I did. It's highly illegal for them to do that though, unless you convince them that it's not a street car.

I used Corksports replacement straight pipe works great but your not gonna pass emissions. I had one of those universal cats, burned it out in like 2 or 3 months. Get a cat thats made for the rx7.

Summit has a bolt on set for less than $200. It has the precat and main. It's much lighter than stock too. Do a search on my S/N and you'll find a good thread on it.

Because its cheap and burns out.

And for straight pipe. Go with a RB presilencer. You won't regret it (otherwise LOUD).

The bolt on options are:
RB Downpipe/Presilencer
Bonez Racepipe

They just bolt up to the stock exhaust manifold.

I'm looking here http://www.rx7.com/store/rx7/fcexhaust.html#Nonturbo and I don't know which one I should get. I live in California where the emission laws are strict and I want to keep my car emission friendly. I own an 89 GXL manual tranny and my exhaust is stock right now but I plan to buy the Racing Beat cat-back system.
Should I look into the Bönez Superflo System which consists of a "2.5" piping feeds into a pre-silencer before feeding into our high flow catalytic converter." or the Bönez Dual Cat System - 86-91 which is a "2.25" piping feeds two high flow catalytic converters."
Basically one has two cats and the other has one with a pre-silencer. Which one should I get? What is the advantage to having two cats and will I be able to pass California smog with a pre-silencer and a hi-flow cat?

Didn't Icemark pass emissions with the Bonez superflo (one cat, presilencer).

sounds like it... the front and intermediate must be both of the pre-cats. The main is self-explanatory. I'd call to make sure. Got a URL for that? Thanks.

Josh
