You can buy Dynomat or B-Quiet online. They are aftermarket sound deadening. I'm not exactly sure of where to find the stock sound deadening besides an apolstery shop.

so then would my best bet be buying someone;s carpets and just taking the rubber matt off and then glueing my new carpet onto the rubber mat?

There are two types of carpet.

The Ultra light weight Sport carpet as found in the 86-87 Sport model, and on the 86-87.5 base model.

And the heavy foam rubber backed GXL type carpet found on GXL models, Turbo models, convertibles and all S5 models.

1Aauto sells the uberlichet Sport style carpet. Consider yourself lucky to get it. You probably have saved a good 20+ lbs from your car.

Or if you have to have heavy backing on the carpet, then get some rag carpet padding available at most car upholstery shops or some foam carpet pad available at most carpet shops and glue it down under/to the back side of the carpet.
