carpet, carpet, carpet!!

Hellllpp!

I'm ready to re-assemble my '87 TII and am having a helluva time getting a replacement carpet. I bought one from 1A Auto which was reasonably priced (not too cheap, not to expensive), but when it arrived, the molded shapes didn't even come close to fitting the fixtures on the floor. The guys at 1A were great - looked at my pix and immediately agreed that it wasn't made right. The sent a replacement which was equally wrong. Seems that they have only one manufacturer they work with, so they're taking it back and issuing a refund. Thanks given for good customer service.
Now, I'm stuck. Does ANYone make a good replacement carpet for the 2nd Gen RX? I'm willing to pay a fair price - even if it's a bit expensive if I can just get a *good* replacement. This is the only thing left keeping me driving an exhausted Cavalier, and out of my RX.
Someone here had suggested Mazdatrix, but I can only find 1st Gen carpet sets there.

Thanks in advance for your time reading this and any input you may have.

I've never seen or heard of any good aftermarket carpet. You're probably better off finding some good used carpet from someone's parts car.

BTW, try and get TII or GXL carpet - much better quality than the base model carpet.

You might want to give Victoria British a call - I know that they sell stuff like door mouldings and bumpers so they might have some carpets - but I don't know.

Sometimes you can find some great carprts at junkyards - but that can be rare.....

Here is the place I got mine from...

Unfortunately I can't speak as to the fit, I have the carpet in hand but won't be installing it until the paint work has been done ( I don't want sanding dust all through it!)

The product itself is not bad, not as thick as the OEM stuff, but when I inquired at the dealer, they had to pick me off of the floor after I heard the prices!

They were saying something like $1000 just for the drivers side! At ACC I paid $200 for a piece that is designed to cover the entire floor up to the storage boxes. They sell that cargo are as well but mine is in good shape there.

Remember, you can't beat the factory stuff for fit and finish but the price will kill you!

I think you should get some subwoofer box carpet, the grayish black carpet. Its really light, lighter than stock, and I think it would look good too! all you would have to do is get somone to help you glue it in. It'd look great, thats what I was going to do, but had to sell my 7 . Good luck, hope you can find some help

Gentlemen,

THANK YOU!

Thanks to all, you've given me a load of resources to explore and I will return a detailed report when I have carpet installed.

Grateful, - kel -

I also purchased carpet from ACC out of Alabama. The carpet is not as well molded as the factory carpet nor as well paded as factory. The install required taking out the dash to properly intstall the carpet. My main complaint is the heel pad isn't flat on the floor, but runs up the trans. hump in the drivers side area. Other than this the carpet fit okay. The price of ACC is very reasonable and they ship it within a week or less time. I have ordered carpet from ACC for several muscle cars I've worked on and the fit was much better than the RX7. The factory carpet is the best, but ACC is a good ,reasonably priced replacement.

Terry, If you don't mind I have a couple of questions about the installation of the ACC carpet.

You mention that the dash had to come out, in you opinion was the best route to take? I was thinking of doing this anyway, but if it will make for a beter job then I will 'definitly' take the dash out, comments?

About the heel pad, any thoughts on how to prevent this? Or is it just a case of the pad being attached to the carpet in the wrong place?

I noticed that none of the holes required for the handbrake, seat rails or seat belts were there, any tips on this part of the installation?

Did you utilize any of the factory underlay and padding? I noticed that the ACC carpet didn't have too much padding, if any.

Lastly, any other general suggestion on how to about the replacement of the carpet, ie. "Tips and Tricks"

Thanks!
