Carbon Fiber Hoods

I am taking more info from you guys again. This time for Carbon Fiber hoods. I need some serious interests here. If you have no cash and won't be able to afford one, then don't bother until you do

As some of you have read, I have been talking with Chuck (rotaryextreme) about doing the body kits that I tried to get going before. It looks like we might have that ball rolling again. In our talks we touched base on CF hoods.

This is your chance to be heard. Just like the body kit thread (all 15 pages of it) post what you would like. Personally, I like the stock TII appearance, and would like one like that, but with a more aggressive scoop, to pull in more air to my IC (track car, a FMIC will overheat it) So tell me what you want to see. Post lics of hoods you like, but be realistic when posting.

I don't know prices yet, and probably wont until we have a design in mind to get an idea.

Let the topic begin!

Oh yeah: finally someone is bringing in the goods.....I think the stock TII also looks good, and a bigger scoop would definitely help. However what i have always envied of the 3rd gen owners is their hoods that have the reversible scoop to let out the hot air coming right out of the radiator. of course that would only work for the N/A guys and those with front mount I/C

P.S the write up for the fuel pump re-wire is coming along, how do you want me to send it to you.

How about a hood for an NA that doesnt want to look like a TurboII -- I am dying for a lightwieght Cowl hood for my Rex's -- I am looking this Christmas for one -- I dont think you can have one by then, but I am definetly interested, I really want one that looks like this one... In fact I would buy this one if I had more info on it....

Wow -- that looks awesome... ok -- so thats my input

Otherwise I want a RAM air hood similiar to that of a Mach1 stang...But thats the mustang talking...

I would definately be up for buying a CF hood for my 86 N/A. The hood on that thing weighs like half as much as the rest of the car. It's SOOOO heavy.

As far as designs go, I'd like one that's exactly like the N/A, one that looks like the turbo II hood, or, maybe be really aggressive and go with the looks of the Black Widow hood for Hondas. It's the one with the two big air inlets right at the front, I would show a picture but I don't know how!!!

i like the reverse scoop idea like my new fiberglass hood, a fmic will not make your car overheat if you have a good fan, also alot of people have problems with overheating when they get a intercooler bigger than what they need. my .02 cents

I would buy either a CF or FG hood that looks like the Mazdaspeed hood for the FD. That is a freaking awesome hood.

If it has openings in it then put them somewhere that it won't matter if rain gets into it. I don't think anyone wants water shorting out some circuits.

rules of the class I race in say I have to use an exact replica of stock so my vote is for the plain old N/A hood.
BTW there is a guy in CA, Mike something who does a lot of Porsche CF body parts. I talked to him a couple of years ago and he said he had a FC hood mold and could churn one out for me if I wanted. $ was about 700-800. A bit steep for my kind of racing but I'm sure if he were making more then one the price would come down

I'm not gonna be able to buy these hoods anytime soon so I'm just shooting out pictures of cowl hoods and hoods other people talked about.

this is the enlarged mazdaspeed opening for Turbo II hoods.
Looks nic but again like you said bigger opening. More aggressive but not too far off and extreme from the stock Turbo II hood.

Myself personally I like cowl hoods.

This is another picture of the Border hood that was mentioned above (white car, cowl hood, split in middle somewhat, says border on car)
I've only seen it at one place for sale as far as I can remember

Here is another cowl hood, this one is by Pan-Speed obviously. I have never seen Pan-Speed bodykits for sale. Anyone know where!??!

This one is more squared and angular. Not as bold and "extreme" as the Border hood

Just use an aluminum N/A hood, I mean, that way you can have a change of looks and the aluminums are pretty light but I can see where you're coming from

soul assassin, which fan do you use? I've tried a few electric fans with no luck.

I tried the HKS kit on my FC, and when I was on the street, it was fine. But when on a road race course, the temps would go up to high. I have a Griffin AL radiator and a black magic fan, so cooling ability was not an issue.

hoods...

I recently got a very nice 86 GXL, *well yesterday*

but yes i would like a lighter hood, the hood sucks *** so heavy.

I really like the SCOOT hood for the FD. That would look sweetass on the fc, could anyone photoshop that hood design onto a fc? to see what it would look like?

this hood is nice too,

ill post some more of other hood designs in a few min.

i like nodes suggestion. a cowl induction hood keeps the engine bay nice and cool. a friend of mine has a CF cowl hood on his 3rd gen, he said temps are noticable lower and always stays low even when racing hard for extended periods of time (eg. midnite mountain runs up and down). if u were to make one like that, id buy one. besides, the damn cat put a scratch all down my hood...

Yo,

I'd vote for the cowl induction hood, but can I say something? PLEASE go to Fiberimages.

http://www.fiberimages.com/main.htm

They are THE CF hood guys. I've seen their work, and I love it. Flawless resin jobs, no creases in the carbon sheet, they're freaking awesome. We just need someone down in SoCal to drop off a hood so they can make a mold. Anyone? Anyone?

i think for the T2 guys, we need a more agressive intercooler scoop to feed more air and avoid heat soak. they would also like to benefit from the heat extraction too tho. so, maybe some rear-facing louvers to vent heat, located on either side of the intercooler scoop

for the NA/ FMIC guys, we just need a big old heat extractor like on the images above. however, our car isnt round and swoopy like the FD, so we should have scoops that are a tad more angular than the FD hoods show.

also, i wouldnt mind seeing a functional cold air scoop for feeding a cold air box behind the passenger side head light.

the cold air headlight cover, isnt all its cracked up to be. theres too many brackets, hinges, weatherstripping, and crap in the way for the cover to actually supply sufficient air to our CAI's. if you could put a small snorkel, or scoop RIGHT above the stock air box, where our aftermarket cone filter resides, that would be the Cats pajamas.

then i could Fab up some cold air boxes out of .125" sheet aluminum, so that we can have ram air. trust me, im workin on this concept using the headlight cover. i will make the swap to a cone filter worth the trubble, and we wont be forced to use HOT under-hood air to feed out intakes.

I may already have this done for you guys. Only problem is that it will not have all the stock hinges and stuff. it will not have any provisions for hinges and will be very light weight(you will have to make your own mounting system, lift off hood with pins would be easiest). problem with the stock hood is lack of air flow at high speed, problem in making the stock hood is the scoop is ducted to the intercooler. this means there is an internal passage that needs to be built and molded to the inside after the outside is finished(time consuming and expensive). I have a race shop that builds a body kit for SCCA E-Production cars and he is trying to build a turbo hood with a large naca duct lower on the hood to get more air at speed and make it cheeper to build. last time I spoke with him the mold was done and he was trying figure out the inside ducting. I should have the first one done about january. I will post a pic when it is done. If you want a flat hood he already makes these, but remember none of the stock latchs or hinges will fit onto it. Also both hoods eliminate the headlight doors. both are intended for race track type cars and are fiberglass but CF can be done for a small price increase.. flat hood is $300 plus shipping and crating and the turbo hood will be around $400 plus s&c. if you are interested send me an email

Yo,

Oops, I didn't mean to say "Induction Hood." I meant the Border style with the reverse vents that suck heat away from the radiator/FMIC. Something subtle and not too outrageous. On the yellow FC with the FC2000 front end, looks too big. The Panspeed could work except I can figure out what that other hole is behind the main vent...
