Carbon Fiber or Fiberglass?

What do you prefer, and why?

Pros and Cons?

better for painting? If I do replace my hood, do I HAVE to get pins?

I'm replacing my hood with one from

http://www.fcstore.com/86_9122?b=1

they even have the headlight covers!

thanks for the input!

It depends on the particular application. But generally speaking, carbon fiber is stronger. Techniques used are similar.

Both are the same for painting. The paint adheres to the surface because of the primer. So...the primer is what you will be concerned with here.

If you replace the hood, do you HAVE to get hood pins? No. You don't HAVE to. Is it recommended that you do? YES.

Fiber glass

It isn't too much heavier than CF and it is cheaper.

CF is really expensive in some cases, fiberglass is almost as good, but the price difference is better.

Use kevlar, it is lighter than CF, but not as strong, and it cheaper, and it is VERY resistant to abraision.

for those prices in that link..id go with the cf..its only 50 bucks more..and u dont HAVE to paint it...which would save some bucks..really depends on personal preference..but the hood pins i believe are suggested because the fiberglass/ carbon fiber hoods are so light and can pop up on the freeway from what i understand.

I wouldn't leave a CF hood un painted. I don't really like the LOOK. But that is just me.

agreed. for a similar price between the two, i would choose CF just because its lighter...but i would still get it painted.

I don't think the difference in weight is enough to make a difference, although I guess every little bit helps. As for strength what does it matter. If you get into an accident enough to crunch the front up you going to damage the hood whether CF for Fiberglass.

I get enough of Kevlar from pulling apart fiber optic cables at work :-p

CF is too expensive for my personal tastes, but it looks very nice if you give it a transparent coat so you can see the weave (Some applications only!)

Fiberglass is nice and cheep in comparison! Doesnt weigh that much more . . .

fiberglas is only close if they uees an epoxy resin to make it, if they use a polyester then it will be very brittleand chances are it won't fit as well.. polyester shrinks @ 15% where as epoxy is 2 - 5 % depending on brand. epoxy is also more flexable then polyester, polyester has @ a 2% flexability where as good epoxys are higher then 10% most are 8%.. polyester does not bond to carbon fiber or kevlar , only epoxy and some vinylesters. Fidn out what they are using before you buy, you may find that the first time some goof slides an *** across your hood or pushes on it you'll end up delaminating the resin from the weave.

if you have used fiberglass cloth, its the same. its more stiff then glass and doesnt want to go into tight areas as well.

as for the hood, theres only a $50 difference between a CF hood and a glass hood! they must bearly use any CF on the "CF" hood, its prolly just 1 layer of CF backed up with cheap o fiberglass. So the end weight is prolly going to be around the same for both hoods (cf and glass). They are doing the CF just for the look.

i made a test piece of CF a while ago, and if i made my NA hood exactly like that test piece, it would weigh 15lbs and be more then strong enough to use the stock latch. (it was a very heavy test piece) stock N/A steel hood weighs around 40lbs. I think if i went for a non-show looking peice, i could get it to weight maybe 8 lbs.

OC is right- Unless the hood is ALL CF, you are just paying for the look...

Most 'CF' hoods are just a normal fiberglass hood with a single layer of CF on top. The difference in the hoods strenght, and weight will be neglagiable.

Weither you use hood pins of not depends on how which hood you go with. Some are very light wieght and require pins, some are much thinker and don't.

those are made by the fc3s.org guys, i doubt they are skimping out on the materials. i am sure that if you email the main guy at fc3s.org, dave gibson i thinks, that he can tell you specifics on the hood as per weight and construction info.

The FC3S CF hoods are in fact FG underskins with CF topskins. You can check out the thread here, from ClubFC3S.com. I ordered an FG T2 hood from them and should be getting it in the next week or 2 I hope.

just get me a good dent free hood to copy. I would copy my hood, but its got a reverse dent, like a tool was under it and it and the hood was closed on it. its a hard dent to get around because i cant fill it like a normal dent

would you guys want an all cf hood that was 8lbs? it would look good, but there would be pretty much no 'clear coat' (AKA gel coat or in this case top coat since im working with epoxy) between the fiber and the elements. So you kinda get a 'textured' surface. it would look bad with paint, but good with none. would be pretty expen$ive too.

oh, you can use polyester with CF too, you just have to make sure, if your CF has a finish its compatiable with the PE resin.
But why would you want to use a 'low performance' resin with somthing thats expensive and high performance like CF? you get much better results with epoxy.

AWR already makes a 7lb carbon fiber hood for race applications.

It does not have cut outs for the headlight lids of course.

I will do a SEARCH to find the info for you.

edit- An alum NA hood w/ out insulation is 20lbs; the ONLY reason for a 17lb $600 "carbon fiber" hood is RICE.

If you want to lose 3lbs off the car, skip lunch and mail me the $600 and I will mail you an alum NA hood.

I'm the type of person that would buy a CF hood and paint it, too..

But ask yourself: when your car allready has an aluminium hood, what the hell is the point? I just don't feel that they're worth the money.
