Yeah, you're right...a joke...

and since you're a metallurgist, you know that uranium is a very soft metal. why do you think they use it on tank armor? because it absorbs and bends, rather than cracks.
Yeah, so what happens when you put a "soft" metal into a tight tolerance machined groove and cross your fingers it doesn't bind?
HINT: Hope it doesn't bind?
So what happens when this soft metal starts to "smear" all over the insides of the engine once it starts to spin?

Yeah, you're right...a joke...

I knew that my link was to Carbon Apex seals, but I was hard pressed to believe someone had actually made Carbon Fiber Apex seals... anyways I believe this discussion has been covered...

carbon brakes on a race car are NOT the same thing as carbon fiber. Race cars use brake rotors that are almost 90%-100% pure carbon molded and machined like normal brake rotors ion conjunction with carbon brake pads. carbon fiber is exactly that. carbon strands held together with an epoxy.

1- the epoxy would melt
2- the strands would frey
3- yes carbon fiber does warp under extreme heat

hope this helps dispel any question of reliability of CF apex seals.

one more thing. Carbon is extremely abrasive and would chew the inside of your housings apart.

don't get all pissed off because you were the little fat kid everyone picked on in school.

let's start with what we know about uranium--it's too heavy. it'll bounce around and chatter up the rotor housings. no sense in analysing it any further. you didn't get the joke--it's ok. some people aren't as quick as others.

a most likely explanation of carbon apex seals is carbon steel
