Car wont stay running
Hey guys, having a problems with my 88 gxl. I've posted before but didnt get any responses. The car was driving fine then all of a sudden it fell flat on its face. I get out of the car to see alittle smoke and then noticed my Cat was RED hot. The car will start after you do the flooding procedure but you have to keep your foot on the pedal to keep it running and then it seems like it's going to die but if you give it more gas and get those rpms up it levels out and keeps running. You cant take your foot off the pedal though you have to baby sit it. I checked the first and secondary ignition boxes and only the primary is firing when the car is idleing.......Could this be it? I havent given it a compression test I'm too scared Just look for other suggestions. Thanks for help everyone. take care.

Try running the car without the cat. It will be LOUD. I had a similar experience to yours. You could also tighten the throttle cable a little so you dont have to keep your foot on the gas constantly. I would be searching for a vac leak as well.

Yeah I know what you mean by loud I started my 85 gsl without the exhaust. I took the cat off the day it happend. The cat is a month old and still looked good. I never thought to start it. I know I have a vac leak but its been that way since I got the car. The car always ran right. The leak is from somewhere between the upper and lower intake manifold and I never had a chance to take care of it.
