car wont start without a boost...

ok i dont know where i would put this since its both a fc/kinda fd alternator question buuuut here goes...

soo it has been doing this to me recently...and then just shuts off all together.
last few weeks bessie as she as been named, sometimes wont start. put the key and clutch in and my idiot lights turn on and my security light is on but car wont start, there, is no clicking sound of the starter.if i keep trying right away it eventually loses power and iddiot lights dim till they dont go on. but then if i let her sit for a few minutes and try again, she wsa starting when i did that a few weeks ago, i have power back and my idiot lights are back to full power, and security light is beeping still jsut as bright but still wont turn over.

i have installed a fd alternator into my 86 fc (230 000km)
wired properly...i think...i read the forums and faqs on how to do so with adding the new wire and such
after driving with this for 4 months-ish, my pigtail had melted to my alternator, and off of the B terminal(big black wire) it frayed/fried the wire about a half inch away from the connection to the alternator
and apparently my alternator and battery are both pooched after it taking it to the shop and them testing this morning
i have a big stereo which is why i upgraded with a 1 farad cap..not sure if that makes a diffrence in this case...
my starter works, cuz if i get a boost it runs

i need your gurus help to try and figure out wtf is wrong with bessie
thanks so much
kaleb

well that wire that was frayed im pretty sure was the ground wire..and the shop said my battery was toast..soooo ya...
i jsut want to know what would have caused that wire to become frayed and why my car will start only on a boost even with all idiot lights being on and no turnover
