car won't start sometimes

hello all I have noticed a slight problem on my 88 gxl. Sometimes when I shut the car down for a few minutes and try to start it back up I get nothing. No sound from the starter just all the lights go on on the cluster and I hear a relay engaging which makes an on off clicking sound when attempting to start the car. Usually after the the 4th try it cranks and turns over. My car is a 5speed manual if that helps. My guess would be the starter or solenoid. Is their anything I could check to confirm the problem? any help would be much appreciated. thanks in advance-----Ren

the starter and solenoid are all in one unit. does it do it when it's hot or when it;s cold too? either way it sounds like you probbaly need a new starter

that's the same problem I'm having, only the engine is turning. All anyone told me is that it's probably flooded. I know a rotary engine flooded sound, But all mine is doing is clicking, but I know that the starter works because it is turning all the belts.

take it to a shop that fixes starters I took mine in and they replaced the solenoid and re soldered stuff on the starter for 40 bucks CND and thats alot better than a $300 starter

change your battery connectors, and check the starter connections, my 89 used to do that all the time...nothing but worked out my wrist

Im having the same problem on my TII. Last night was gonna be the first time im gonna start my car (3 years project) but when i turn the key ON i can hear the fuel pump prime but when i try to start it wont do anything. I pulled the starter and it was indeed the little solenoid was messep up. Reman starter from AUTOZONE runs 89 dollars and to have it rebuilt would cost me 80 dollars..

If your concerned that your Starter Is the potential culprit, than jump start It to rule out this possibility.
