car wont start! need help!

Hey guys im new here. I have a 89 turbo 2 with an engine that has 10k on it, and it wont start. It was running fine a few weeks ago.It cranks over but nothing. Ive checked for spark, compression, and the timing was fine before so it has to be fuel. It never had a smooth idle, it would jump around every once in a while 200 rpm. I replaced the fuel pump but that wasnt the problem. The fuses seem fine, So I think it might be the opening circiut relay but that is just an assumption. Have any of you run across this or now what is wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew

how can you tell if its flooded because i guess that might be the problem too? What can you do to unflood it?

1.) If the car is flooded, pull the EGI fuse, (green one in the fuse box under hood) and crank her a few times. Then replace it, and try to start the car. That may work, it may not. It depends on how flooded the car is.

2.) From there, pull the plugs, pull the fuse, crank her again and see if gas vapor is emitted from your plug holes. If so, crank it a few times, get that gas out. Stop for a minute, repeat maybe 2 or three times.

3.) While you have the plugs out, check them out, are they black? Do they appear fouled? If you have a torch, any kind will do, heat them, and try to burn the excess gas off. If you have a spark plug sand blaster, you can do that as well, and clean them, just make sure ALL of the sand is off of them. You can also bake them in the oven. Those options are only if money is an issue, or temporary, your best bet is to just get new plugs.

4.) You may also need to squirt some motor oil into your plug holes to build compression. I used a rubber hose attached to an old school oil can we had to do this on my car. Once it fires it will smoke like hell, but will burn the oil off.

Did the car smoke at idle? If so what color? Any other symptoms? Think of every detail you can and list it, the more details, the better we can diagnos your problem.

Good luck!

Maybe a little white smoke but not much. The only symptoms are that when i go to start the car in the mornings it would rev to 3k and then die unless I gave it some gas and waited for it to catch, and that the idle was never stable. The fuse box under the hood never had the top cover and some of the fuses (including the egi fuses) have a little blue corrosion. I tested them and they seem fine but I'm going to change them out and get a cover on monday. By the way since I dont have the reference of the top fuse box cover, which fuse is the EGI? The previous owner changed the fuses and there arent any green fuses.

from left to right, the fuses are as follows:

egi computer-30Amp
egi ign.-40Amp
head-30Amp
main-80Amp
nothing
btn-60Amo
retractor-30Amp

If your smoking white, you may be burning coolant. Have you noticed the car using any coolant? After doing the un-flood stuff, and if it doesn't work, you may want to dis-connect your DP and check for any coolant. Karack can tell you how to pressure test the motor, and probably help you out better than I can.

Also, how many miles are on the car? The motor, the turbo? (if rebuilt, etc.)

The car has 128,000 but the motor is new with about 10k. Im assuming that everything else has 120,000 miles. I have only had the car a few months. Well I'll try unflooding it and see where that leaves me. The car does sound different when it cranks and from what I have read, that is a tell that it is flooded. Its sounds like it is turning quicker and easier. The coolant level doesnt really change so I dont think It could be a problem. Thanks for your help. I'll post my results later.

Thanks,
Andrew

just last week I had a similar problem mine was in the Air flow meter in the plug that is attached to the bottom of the air filter...........I am not sure exactly how it works but it is sometjhing like this when you crank the motor (key in start) the fuel pump is energized when the car starts or when the key is in the "on " position or "run" the only way the fuel pump is energized is through and by the AFM so if the car doesn't start then the Fuel pump shuts down or is not energized car starts, key to on or run, the air flow meter gets the signal through the air pump and the Air Flow meter , which tells the ecu to send energy to the fuel pump It is something like that on my car it would start run for 3 seconds and die I could press on the gas and keep it running for maybe 5 to 10 seconds but finally die I knew something was shutting the pump down but what? it finally got to me when I read the article about "The RX-7 technical page" through the geo-cites rx-7 web site ...............http://www.geocities.com/huguesdc1/i............click on fuel here is the paragraph to understand
The fuel pump is not on when the ignition switch is at the ON position. It is on only when you crank, that is, the switch is at the START position. The fuel pump keeps on ticking if the car is actually started (air flows through the AFM). hope this helps

good luck
