Car wont start

ok, the car ran all day today, and then i left home to go to walmart to pic up coolant for a radiator fulsh and it wouldn't even turn over. i have searched and have a to do list but want to know if i am missing anything. i also found out earlier at the dmv that the car was registered as non service sience 2004, so i am planning on dropping the gas tank and checking to see the condition, pulling the injectors and having them looked at. i dont know about the fuel lines, should i just get new ones or clean them? Also, i tryed to jump start it and the battery was right above 12v the whole time and nothing, i am also getting my starter checked. if there is anything else i should take into consideration that you can contribute, let me know, thanks all.

oh yeah, and the funniest thing of all was that after i had it towed home i tried to start it and it almost turned over but my finger slipped and then i tried to start it again but then it just wouldn't again.

Of topic and non-technical replies deleted. Incidentally, this cleared the thread of all but one reply.

Regarding the problem, if by "won't turn over" you mean that the starter will not spin the engine, then you need to check the basics. Battery voltage and battery connections are most important. The lugs get corroded and can make intermittant contact, especially when the starter draws several hundred amps. After that, check the key switch. They begin to wear out over time. If that checks out, finally look at the starter. 12V at the big connection? 12V at the solenoid when the key switch is set to "start"? If so, then hit it with a hammer several times? Does it work now? If so, then the solenoid is sticky. If it doesn't work, then swap in another starter...

alright, i put a new starter on, and i can hear the starter trying to turn the fly wheel but the engine is a no go, it doesn't turn, wich brings me to another question. I was under the car replacing the starter and there is a brown or black plastick piece inside of a metal cylinder right next to the starter but on the block with, i think, three wires coming out of it into a connection harness. on mine the harness is melted and the thing isn't even plugged in, i know this is not good, and i was thinking that it might be the problem. other than a blown apex seal i don't know what it could be... so i will be searching... maybe it's flooded???? if anyone can help it would be much appreciated, even if you have advice. i am getting sick of this, i am so close to just buying a turbo motor and trans with ecu and harness and doing a swap... i know i also need a different shaft too. but for now if you guys could help me out that would be more than awsome. thanks.

Your postings are confusing.
We could use a lot more details other than "it doesn't start"!

1) Nothing happens - no sounds, no clicks, no nothing when you turn key to START?

2) Something "clicks", but the starter doesn't turn over at all?

3) Starter spins, but engine doesn't spin?

4) Starter spins, engine spins, but engine doesn't catch at all?

5) Engine cranks over and tries to start, but it dies?

So which is it???

Yeah. If I couldn't get my car to start I'd just chunk the engine and transmission and put a turbo engine and transmission in the car. That'll fix that problem. humor

Try pulling the plugs and then crank it over, but first put a piece of cardboard between the engine and coils that way less chance of fire. If it is flooded pull the injectors and check or I would replace the o-rings.

my posts are over a period of time,(sorry) as of now there is a click noise when i turn the key, like the sarter is trying to turn the engine but can't.

i dont see what is so funny about considering a motor swap as one of my options when it wouldn't cost too much in comparrison to a new daily driver. the way i see it, a motor, trans, ecu, and harness would be about 1.5 times the cost of a new seal kit ( this is under the assumption that it is the apex seal ). i was only saying that it is an appealing solution.

So the starter clicks but the engine doesn't turn? Can you spin the engine by hand? What if you remove the stater and test it out of the car? Does the starter now work?

^^^Yea, See if you can turn the motor by hand on the front pulley. If not see if it will turn backwards any. If you can't get a grip on anything on the front.....while you have the starter off see if you can trun the motor by using a large flat head screwdriver and prying on the flywheel itself.

If you're not able to turn it...you may have problems.

sounds like a bad battery. Same thing happened to me last weekend, it just made the click sound, and nothing, even when using jumper cables with another car. I replaced the battery, and it started right up.

thanks for the batt info... i will try that too, i tryed to turn the underdrive pulley and it still moves. i was also wondering, when the key is in the position right before it starts, there is a click sound (much like the starter noise) and the battery voltage drops to about 8 or a little under when that happens. any other suggestions... thanks guys.

i had a busy day today, but i will try the battery tomorrow, i have a question reguarding the automatic trans... the question is, right by the starter there is this cylindrical shaped piece that houses a plasic (brown i think) thing that has either three or two wires that go into a connection harness, i was wondering what that was for because on mine the harness is melted and is not even conected... i earlier confused this with the block instead of tranny . thanks for all of your help.

Sounds like an ignition switch. can you jump the starter and get it to turn? The fact tht the pulley turns freely is a good sign. Also follow the ground wires and check for corrosion between them and the chassis.

thanks, i was looking at that right now and it looks ghetto rigged, i think i am going to pull the entire ground (there is only one ground, to the starter) are redo it with some 2 guage wire to the starter and strut tower... i dont know, i am going to try to get another daily while i work on this, i might be pulling my motor soon if i get another car. so if anyone wants any parts i am giving you a heads up... i will keep you all posted if you are interested. i am going to try and part out most of it...and then maybe a kei office suspension, and then turbo II s5 conversion.... just thinking though. thanks for your help.

well, the reason i say this is because i want to go turbo anyway, and i am probably getting a new car or a turbo motor... so most of the engine compartment would probably be for sale, i dont know though, i will try to keep you all posted, i know i sound stupid but i am just in a tight situation, so i will give an update tomorrow. thanks again.

whats up, for the updade, as things look right now, i am seriously contemplating getting a turbo motor trans and all the goodies for a figure in the low to mid 2k range... and doing it myself... so i have a lot of research to do... i am still not 100% sure... so far i have regrounded the main grounds and positive ones... i also noticed that the plate covering the bottom of the trans were the flywheel teeth are covered by a plate is missing a cover... i havent checkd my injectors, but did check the fuel line and it seemed to be clean. any other suggestions... i already have a starter and battery (new) and redid my grounding and positive wires...
