car won't start....

guys I have problem my car won't start.
it rotates but it won't fire up.

....about few weeks ago my car would play games on me. I would start it up for 20 seconds and then it would die out.
now it came to the point where it won't start any more.

I was thinking two things, spark plugs or fuel filter.

I have 1986 GXL N/A ..

all this happened recently.

Plugs would be an easy thing to check and start with. I don't know how much you know about rotaries but there is also the chance it's flooded. When they flood, they don't unflood really. You need to pull the ignition fuse under the hood to start her up and then you can put the fuse back in. I would assume that if you've been having trouble with it running it could be the injectors are leaking or maybe compression. How many miles on the engine?

I believe what he meant was, pull the fuses and the plugs, crank it over to clear the housings of the gas (I put an old rag near the holes so that stuff does not spray down my engine compartment) give a few squirts of MMO, ATF or oil, crak it over again. reinstall new plugs and fuses and start it up.

If this does not work and you are getting fuel, get the compression checked.

you see when I start my car I would never give gas while turning the key.....then when it starts I let it worm up until my RPMs come below 1000.
When I bought the car I wasn't able to tell how many miles it has, because the gauges didn't work.
The engine looked very very clean, I'd say 80 000 miles on rebuilt engine.
Not sure if it's flooded....cause it doesn't smell like gasoline when I'm over the engine.

I have noticed something though, it was using a lot of gas on a trip that usually doesn't require much spending of the fuel.

do you guy think my timing is a little of ......

did you get a compression check? maybe a few weeks ago it still had some compression left in which ever seal was bad. It may of completly failed. To do the simpl crude inaccurate compression test, 1st unplug your fuel pump located on the drivers side shock tower in the hatch. then unplug your crank angle sensor and pull out your EGI fuse as well. Take off one of your plugs, i forget if it matters which one. Ask a buddy to crank the car over while your standing in the engine. Listen for 3 even sounding air hisses leaving the sparkplug hole, if one sounds weaker than the other ones or u hear a hiss miss(as in not hiss when it sounds like its supposed to) this is the indication that one or more of your seals are bad. Dont mean to sound pessimistic, but it might be what it is. Hope its something minor and not something of this severety.

from the faq:
My car doesn't start
"Remember when starting a fuel injected car you should never pump or press the accellerator pedal, but if it won't start it is probably flooded, Hold the accelerator pedal all the way down while cranking, do not pump the pedal. If it still doesn't start after a few tries, Then remove the EGI fuse and crank a couple more times, then re-install the fuse and try starting again. If then the car still fails to start it then you need to remove and clean the spark plugs, put in a teaspoon of ATF into the lower sparkplug holes, re-install the spark plugs and try again. Make sure you change your oil after you have started and run the car ASAP."
You don't have to pull the plugs at first is what I've always been told and what it says here. Gadget is right, his way is just in case the first way does not work.

...don't mean to sound dumb, but would the rotors still turn if I had my plugs taken out?

when you take off your spark plugs check for fuel on them. clean them. unflood it. if it still doesnt start then try push starting it, it works everytime!
