Car wont go past 4000 rpm??

I have a friend with an S5 N/A RX7, and from the way hes describing it to me the car SOMETIMES wont go past 4000rpm and starts to die out. He also said it happens alot in 3rd gear??? im kinda stumped because when we bought the car it ran perfect.
But he also said that sometimes it will drive perfect through all rpm's.

can anyone help with this problem??

Sounds like a problem related to the secondary injectors; search "3800 RPM hesitation"

If a car is driven over 3800rpm using light throttle, the secondary injectors do not come online. IF you put the pedal down hard and put the engine under a LOAD, the secondary injectors will come online when you reach 3800 rpm.

When under load and you hit 3800 rpm, two things happen. One thing is the secondary injectors come online. The other thing is the primary injectors duty cycle gets cut in half.

So do the search for hesitation if you will.
