Car vibrates under load...

Well, I drove my car that I JUST swapped from auto -> manual on the other day. I just drove it around the block though and it felt pretty good. Yesterday I drove it around town, though, and whenever I put the car under load it started to vibrate pretty badly. Now, another problem I'm having is that the car does not want to accelerate at higher speeds. Low speeds seem pretty normal( a good bit better than the old beater celica, not nearly as good as my old TII) I can't really accelerate past 70 or so...

I think something may be out of place or so... probably the driveshaft.

Anyone know what temperature these items should be normally?

after about 30 minutes of city driving the differential was about 150, transmission 150, and the driveshaft 200. This also leads me to believe that it is a problem somewhere with the driveshaft.

edit: could it be the cats? I looked down the pipe of the main cat and the waffle was still perfectly waffleish. But I know clogged cats will cause accel problems.

Something you installed obviously is out of balance, try installing some form of weight to one of the bolts on the driveshaft, drive it around & see if anything changes...If it gets worse, move the weight 180*...Are the tranny mounts good? Top end losses could be a cat clogging, especially if they're still OEM...

check your motor mounts. Also, check the mount for the tranny in the middle of the saddle, it should have a rubber gromet on the bottom too. Two motor and one tranny mount, check all three.

Would a bad motor mount limit top speed? it seems to not want to accelerate past 65 or 70 or so...

I DO have a vibration problem... but my top speed is also limited. I think the problems are related.

no, the mounts won't effect top speed. But it would cause vibration. There are so many things that the poor performance could be I won't even venture a guess

lol

yes it could be 2 separate things. but the fuel injectors could cause both.

I broke it off, tapped a new hole and ran some pipe fittings and some copper coil.

so yes the split air pipe is there.

does it vibrate on a free rev? (no clutch, no gear)
maybe its mounts

does it vibrate at speed? u joints

does it vibrate with the gears?
somethin else

you can diagnose what part of the powertrain its in at least.

Try narrowing down the problems one at a time. Try to figure out what circumstances make the vibration occur.

If you let the car coast at say 40 mph does it still vibrate even though the engine is at idle? If it does, then it is most likely a drivetrain balance problem.

Does it get better or worse with increasing mph?

Does it get better or worse with increasing rpm.

Does it vibrate when increasing rpm and not moving at all?

Where does it feel like the vibration is coming from? Usually engine vibration can be felt in the steering wheel and drivetrain vibration felt in your seat.

Are you sure the u-joints on the driveshaft you installed are good?

Was the new driveshaft balanced? If not use two large steel band clamps and perform a field balance (trial and error).

Running rich or lean can also cause the engine to vibrate. Make sure you have no vacuum leakes.

Answer some of these questions and you can start to narrow down where the problem is.

HTH,

Scott

okay...

it doesn't matter what gear its in. The higher the RPM's the worse it vibrates.

when the car bucks, the vibration bucks with it.

the driveshaft used was pulled from a car that was not having this problem.

I need to check for leaks... might not have plugged that one line that went to the auto transmission.

edit: there is a slight vibration that I noticed when the car is in neutral... I can rev it and the vibration gets worse the higher the revs get. I put a timing light on the spark plug wires and all 3 coils seem to be firing well.

edit: the car also does not want to hold an idle on falling RPM's. I can blip the throttle and get it to hold.

new info:

fixed vac leak, car doesn't die on decel anymore. yay.

BUT...

when the car is under load and I shake the car left or right, it vibrates more/less. well not so much more turning left as much as not at all turning right.

the engine and counterweight were already together. I used a lightweight flywheel.

edit: and that would be RPM dependent and not necessarily load dependent.

If it wasn't shaking before you did the swap, you only have a narrow list of suspects, right? Just go over everything you touched...

yeah, blown rotor sounds unlikely, but the symptoms do seem to fit, you didnt happen to unplug any of the FI stuff by accident did you?

a blown rotor doesn't stop vibrating when you turn right
