Car smokes when warming up, NORMAL?

88 GXL NA-My car smokes when you first start it, and then its gone after about 5-10 minutes, but If I give it gas I really dont notice any more coming out. New motor though, and I thought maybe it was my idle air screw, so I looked at my friends car, he has a base 86 NA, and I adjusted both of my idle screws to match his. Maybe is it running a little rich? Or is this normal?

What colour smoke? Blue = oil, black = gas (running rich), white = coolant.

Mine smokes blue for maybe 30 seconds when starting...especially when it's been sitting for a while. The story is that the oil injectors may be leaking into the intake/chamber. This *MAY* actually be a good thing--your engine is already starved for oil when you first start it.. However, in theory, it's bad for your plugs, o2 sensor, and cats..

Moral of story: As long as the smoking stops "soon" after starting it up, it should be okay. If it continues to smoke during normal operation, a seal is probably on it's way out.

Odd, tho...how new is the engine? Maybe they reused the old oil injectors....or something.

The idle screws wouldn't do anything in this case, since it's oil, not gas.......assumnig it's blue.

Probably a dumb question to ask, but has your sub-zero start assist system been disabled? This is a small reservoir located on the passernger's side of the firewall and contains an anti freeze/water mixture. It is designed to inject this mixture in cold weather to raise compression. Mazda has published TSB's that recommend removing this device.

If it is still on the car and is injecting coolant into your intake, your car will put out considerable white smoke.

If this is not the case, are you losing coolant? If so then you have a big internal engine problem.

Im not leaking coolant, or losing it. And no I havent removed that system, I really should, it gets cold here in Ohio, but not that cold. Is it easy to take off? Like, anything I need to know?
