Car in shop told turbo maybe bad. choices?
so my car is in Shooks motorsport shop in IL. so far it is going well he emails me a lot but not so much now. My brother who took the car into the shop talks to him all the time however my brother being the way he is doesn't call me. i was told by my dad Ryan thinks my turbo maybe bad however he has to dig into it more to find out if it is. so my question if the turbo is bad on my S4 what are my choices? i know i could upgrade or have it rebuilt. (bnr i think). what is a good setup to run without breaking the bank? a also told me the compression is about low 90 and mid 80. for 1 and 2 respectfully.
First of all, in order to correctly evaluate the health of the engine, a compression test should be done with a tester that is designed for rotary-engine compression testing. You need to determine the compression numbers for each face of each rotor and the engine rpm during the test. The difference between rotor faces is more significant than just the overall compression for the rotor. You cannot evaluate the compression with just a single number for each rotor. If all faces of both rotors are within the 80-90 psi range at an engine cranking speed of 250 rpm or less, the engine should run just fine.
Second, how do you know that the turbo needs replacing? Have it tested by someone who knows turbos. If it needs refurbishing, BNR is a good place to go for that service. As far as upgrades go, the sky's the limit. Just depends on the depth of your pockets, the availability of someone to do the work, and what your goals are with respect to HP and torque.

I'm sure Ryan knows what he is talking about. I'm having him tweak my haltech e6k. Also he's a pretty legit guy. But your options are, to either just buy a cheap stock turbo. Or better yet, get a s5 manifold and turbo set up. Should be decently cheap.

i trust ryan i just want to be prepared if he tells me the turbo is shot. how ever i have a feeling in is my fault when i reinstalled the turbo. i may have used the wrong gaskets.
