Car sat for a year, does the motor need rebuilt?

My 87 TII has sat for about a year. I've read that if the motors sit too long and you fire it up you blow apex seals. I need to know if there is a way to keep this from happening. I plan on rebuilding the motor for drifting but would like to drive the car before I do it. PLease help.

Change the gas in the tank. As long as the engine wasn't already blown when it was last ran then you have no worries about it being blown now.

I gave my FC a rigorous tune up with no major equipment changed when it sat for 5 years and it ran fine when I put fresh gas in it.

Putting some ATF down through the spark plug holes and letting it sit overnight while periodicly turning the the motor over by hand can free stuck apex seals. When I bought a gslse several years ago, it would only start on 1 rotor, and would barley run (sat 3 years) with very low compression on 2 of thre faces on the front rotor, and slightly low compression on the rear I got it for just a few hundred because of this. I did this with the ATF in but I way overdid it, let it sit for a few days and used at least 2 quarts of atf.

After clearing the atf which took a while it started up and ran on both, and had good compression. I put another 80k miles on that car.

mopar combustion chamber cleaner would work probably work better than atf.

just for kicks, get new plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, and some new gas and give her a shot. I'm sure nothing bad will come of it if the motor was previously in decent shape. Even if you just went out there and started it i'm sure it'd be alright(not that I advise this)

I would sort of do a combo of what SLO and DOM C said..let it sit over night with ATF(but an ounce is lots) .,then do a TUNE-UP..and let 'er Rip..YOu say you plan to rebuild anyways so you won't have much to lose..By The way..when you get her started.. the ATFluid..It will smoke like A CracK Addict!!..SO make sure that you have a WELL Ventilated spot to start it..Or you may have the Fire Dept.at your door..(yes it does smoke that bad..)..and best of luck to ya..and weclome to Rotary..KoolAid!
