Caps lock is your enemy. And, from what I know, lots of white smoke, even if it sat for a while is bad news. What does the smoke smell like? If it's sweet, a coolant seal is probably bad. Also, is there coolant on the spark plugs? If so, and the smoke smells sweet, it sounds like it might be almost time for a new engine. Also, what's the compression? Anyone correct me if I'm wrong about anything.

how long did you run it for?

99.99999% of rotaries that sit for more than two months will SMOKE LIKE HELL for the first 2 minutes and then it will gradually go away.

I got this FB fired up in a parking garage and nobody could even see in there for hours, but after running the engine for about 10 minutes there was no smoke at all.

I have to agree. Mine sat for a week, and bellowed out white smoke for about 5 mins. It's fine.......

As long as the car doesnt smoke every single time you start the car up its not a problem. However if it does smoke everytime you start it up you might want to try using some block weld like in the write up at www.rotaryresurrection.com

I agree with the previos posts- smoke is normal as long as it isn't every start. Normal engines will start in about 2 or 3 seconds...any longer starts and especially flooding or long starts/flooding when hot, usually means a bad engine.

I'm not sure about this, But doesnt it help if you pull a spark plug and spray/squirt a little oil in the engine? I read about that somwhere. It will soften up the seals a little bit.

I'm going to steal this thread and ask another question. My dad went to look at an S5 vert the other day. It was a 'pet' car and not driven very much, infact, when we went over there it didn't even have plates or any insurance so I couldn't drive it. Anyway, the guy let me start it up and it blew some smoke for a little, nothing big, and it went away. However, the idle stayed at about 1200 rpms. The guy said it went down to 800 or so after you drove it for a little bit. Any ideas on why this would be so?

Sorry for the thread jack.

the car has a warm up sequence so the idle should drop after about 5 minutes of driving. do not redline the car until it is fully warmed up.

If you're looking for a cheap motor, you could try a junkyard (if you're lucky). If you want a cheap, really good rebuild (which is your best bet) go to www.rotaryresurrection.com

If you're already to the point where you're looking for a new engine, try the block weld procedures listed above. It does work.
