car running extremely rich

my car is running extremely rich right now and i was wondering if it would help if i got an SAFC-II, the only problem is that i have nowhere to dyno the car, so would it be possible to lean out the mixture without dynoing the car?
thanks tony

Can I ask how you came to the conclusion that it was running rich?

no you can not... just kidding!
well first of it gets bad mileage and it smells like gas all the time especially when i come off the throttle, so i was assuming it was running rich plus my mods. it came with a open air bov, 3 inch open exhaust, no air pump, and a 3 inch tid

Stock ECU rotaries with open exhaust will make your eyes water, and people in the drive through hate you... Its definately a rich mixture, because thats how it came from Mazda.

You CAN get a wideband and an SAFC, or you could do some seat of the pants testing, but I dont really reccommend that.

Not unless you get an SAFC or a standalone. Nobody chips our ECUs and there is no adjustment.. well hell.. there damn near arent any adjustments for anything on the S5s! If I recall, they dont even have a variable resistor..

are the safc's tough to install, and would it be totally unsafe to tone down the fuel just a little, also couldn't i find the settings from someone elses safc who has similar mods?

Oh no, you will pick up some power if you lean the mix.. Thats one thing that has been dyno proven around here. I cant speak intelligently about how hard the SAFC would be for you to install, I dont know what you are capable of.

well.. I would say that would be a good start, but the problem is that every car is different. Mixtures are affected by everything you do to that motor. One persons settings wont necessarily work for your car. It *might* get you into the ballpark though.

yup, j-rat is right, although similar mods, two cars MAY have different AFRs. you could get an safc and a wideband and lean out the mixture. i just installed an safc-2 yesterday...not that hard, i pulled the entire cable from the ECU clip, and put the safc's cables to that (i didn't have to solder any cable). if you need more specific instructions PM me.
