car not letting me change gears?

hey

(1990 turbo II)
I've been driving my car and i noticed that when i would slam it into 2nd at high rpms, often it would grind a tiny bit. That was the only gear that did it though. Also sometimes it would make a loud clunk sound when downshifting into 2nd. I didnt think much of it at the time but today when i left school I noticed that it wasnt going into gear. I applied a little more pressure and it still didnt go in... so i came to a complete stop and then it went into first... and i accelerated and it went into 2nd fine... and 3rd... then I went to downshift into 2nd and it wouldnt let me. I drove all the way up the hill towards my house and i got to a stop sign at the top where the hill ends. The car wouldnt let me put it into any of the gears including reverse... A man helped me push it down the hill again and once it started rolling it went into 2nd. I got into my complex and parked in the garage. When I shut the car off i played with the shifter a bit without my foot on the clutch. It was going into gear so easily that i could have done it with my pinky, it felt very loose. I looked at the clutch fluid and its aproximately half full. Anyone know what the problem could be? Would the half full clutch fluid have anything to do with it?

Thanks
matt

yeah ill go with synchos going out... i "heard" it wasnt that hard to fix if u use ur manual... or maybe ur pressure plate is going out.. take it to a tranny shop and spend 100$ on a test to see what it is... mine sometimes grinds third when its hot out, mechanic told me it was a syncro going out, but its no big deal

that doesnt really make sense tho. When i was completely stopped and the car was turned on it wouldnt go into any gear.... not just second. And then when i shut the car off it went into every gear very easily. Maybe the synchro is done but i still think theres got to be some other kind of problem.

From: Rancho Cucamonga Ca,
Sounds like a bad pressure plate to me. Mine just went out last week, same thing happened to me on the freeway. Traffic stopped, and when went to shift to 1st to start moving again, the car wouldn't shift into any gears. I turned the car off, shifted it to first and then tried to start the car with the clutch pedal depressed, the car just lurched forward. I had the car towed home and after replacing the pressure plate, it works fine again. I say check your hydrolics and if there's no prob there then get a new clutch and pressure plate. Just my 2 cents.

i would think downshifting it would increase the wear on the synchos...
trying to spin the clutch from a low speed to a very high rpm vs slowing the clutch down???

so if your synchos are going bad, you are probalby makign tiw orst with all your downshifts
