Sounds like you have an intake leak. Check all your hoses for cracks.

I have an 89 rx-7 gtu - my car idles really rough when i start it too. As a matter of fact - it's idles rough when i stop completely or put it in reverse. I bought fuel injector cleaner and used it - it did nothing for the idle. I was told a couple things.
1. My throttle could be screwd up. even turning the screw doesn't make my idle any better.

2. I was told to change my spark plugs and wires. Sometimes that helps idling. But in my case - it didn't.

3. My fuel pump could have crapped out. - Sometimes my car just wont start! I heard that it could be because my fuel pump isn't getting enough fuel through. So i YET have to check that.

4. I was also told to check my TPS which i havn't done either.

I would say - check the fuel filter and the fuel pump and make sure that enough fuel is getting through when u start it. If they r both fine - Check your TPS, spark plugs, and plug wires. If it still idles rough when u start it - have your throttle looked at. I havn't found a good place near me yet. Everyone by me tells me to screw off because no1 like to work on these cars. I hope i helped. ttyl
