Unhappy Car died; EGI COMP fuse blown

I was driving down the road and the car dies ... AAA towed it to my house, then I found that the 30a EGI COMP was blown. It blew another 30a fuse so it is a short somewhere.

I checked the main relay and its fine. The haynes manual said that the 30a fuse goes only to the main relay, and the air bypass soleniod.

Can someone lead me in the right direction? The car won't start at all.

Thanks

The main relay is but the first stop in the circuit. It also feeds the ECU and a whole bunch of solenoids. If you still have the ACV and all of the emissions solenoids on the car, you need to start isolating things to find the bad guy.

I'd start with the two solenoids on the ACV, they seem to go more often than anything else. Pull the electrical connectors apart (at the harness above the ACV), and reinsert a good fuse. See if she blows with power on, then with the car started and run through the gears. If she doesn't blow (no pun intended), you've found the culprit. If she does, get back with us and we'll hit the schematics a bit more...

Wayne,

Are the two ACV solenoids you are talking about located right under the BAC with the short vaccum hoses popping out?

Also, if I have the ingition on and everything together, the 30a fuse will blow. So if I disconnect something(ACV sol.) and it doesn't blow, then that is likely that problem, right?

I still have an air pump, and all the emissions stuff is stock.

Thanks very much,

Charles

If the '88 you have in your profile is NA (non turbo), then your ACV will be on the right side of the engine, above the exhaust manifold. The two solenoids (port air solenoid on the front, and split air solenoid on the rear) have electrical wiring going to them- can't miss it. About 1' up the wiring are the connectors.

Sometimes when one of them fries, you can see black burn marks or melted wiring- that'll be a dead giveaway as to which one is bad. For now, if nothing visual is noticed, disconnect both connectors, and see if the fuse blows again during driving...

If the fuse blows with just the ignition switch on, it very well may be another component or solenoid that's the prob. We'll get to that later if it's not the ACV...

The ACV is on the right side of the engine, just above the exaust. It has two solenoids screwed into it. These two solenoids have an electrical harness about a foot long that attach to the emissions harness. I'd find those two solenoids and disconnect their plugs from the emissions harness and then see what happens with the fuse.

That fuse feeds all the solenoids on the left side of the engine. The blue, yellow, orange, grey, and the BAC , airbypass solenoid and air bypass relay.

About the ACV on a 86......if you know where your auxillary port actuators are, then the acv is b/t them. Look for an approx one inch dia hose going from the bottom of it and the same size hose going to it.

Or....look at the airpump. The hose from the airpump goes to the ACV.

Nay, nay. You did not tell him where the acv was nor how if he downloads the factory service manual from the free download site shown in the FAQ thread at the beginning of this site, that he can see the location of the acv in the pictures and also check things out per the fsm. Just download the FUEL section, Wayne, and you'll see where the parts are (humor).

Did too...Read it again...AND I told him which solenoid was which on the ACV... ...plagiarist...You may need to look that one up (not in the FSM, but another book commonly refered to as a "dictionary"

Anywhose, he's gonna be out of action until tomorrow, then he'll be back on (got a PM from him).

Ok I fixed it, sort of. First, I unpluged both ACV wires(above exhaust). The fuse didn't blow at first, but then it did. After playing around with it I narrowed the problem area somehwere in the wiring harness between the alternator and the ACV. I got the car running, but I havn't found the exact problem, but I know it must be a wire in that area.

I'm going to look at it some more on Friday or Saturday. Thanks for your help. I will let you know when I find out the exact wire.
