Cant rev above 4000

the other day my 88 SE stoped reving above 4000, its get up to it and just seams to hit a wall, before it would go higher but smoke terribly when it gets there, anyone have any ideas?

the car is also turning off whenever I turn or stop, it seams to be b/c its using energy from teh powe stearing or power brakes, but if i put in the clutch it will usually come back on.

thanks

Ken

Mine is doing this some too. Trying to figure it out myself. Clutch doesn't help me much though.

I don't believe there is a limp mode on 86-88 models. The 4000 stumble is related to the secondary injectors not coming on line. Most likely a grounding problem for the boost/pressure sensor, ECU or just bad grounding of the engine to chassis, battery to chassis etc. The dieing coming to a stop light is related to a poorly set idle and or no signal to the bac. Pull the bac plug off at idle and see if the idle drops a touch. If it does not you need to check the bac signal. What rpm does your car idle at fully warm???

Keep us posted This is important!!!

Are you able to climb to 4000 on the freeway?

Last year i was unable to take my '90 GXL (130K) above 4K and unable to take it above 80 mph on the freeway. It was smokint terribly at startup. Talket to a mechanic on the phone - said that smoke was from leaking oil seal. The reason that I could not run above 4K rpm was because oil had contaminated the pre cat. Invested 4500 in rebuild new radiator, transmission mounts etc. but could not justify cost of CAT when mechanic said that reasonable option was to punch it with a roc (for now) and replace later. Car runs NICE!

Check those CATS may be oil filled.

Hope This Helps

TJ

Mine has recently started this as well, no smoke at all though. Just a freaking wall at 4,000 rpm runs hard to 3,999 rpm. I installed electric cooling fans and advanced the timing when this all started. I dont drive my car so I havent messed with it lately. This weekend I will figure it out. Hopefully
