Can't Pass smog In CA. need new Cat...

Title says it all, I have an 89 GTUs. New owner.
It putters on Idle in the middle where the Cat is so I assume that its the Cat. I see a little cracking on the edge where the factory weld is on the Cat. I see that there are 2 pre Cat components. I have a few questions.

1. Can I bypass the 2 pre Cat and just get a muffler shop to make a straight pipe from the headers to the Cat? Is it Emission okay for CA?

2. Is there a good aftermarket Cat that anyone can recommend to get that I can pass the CA emmision test with? And related to the 1st question, do I need the pre Cat components.

3. I saw in some theads that the Cat was ment to burn off excess fumes. Will an Aftermarket do this? or as well or better?

No you will fail the visual. There are no headers that are CARB certified, and the visual says there needs to be three cats on a 86-88 non turbo (two pre-cats and a main monolithic cat).

Any aftermarket monolithic cat sized big enough will work fine. Monolithic cats will have a air pump input into them (usually in the middle). As far as the pre-cats they are only used in warm up and not used when the engine is warm as in testing.

If you mean burn off excess unburned fuel/air mixture then yes, that is part of the purpose of a cat converter.

Thanks for the great response.
The 2 pre Cat components, are they going to cause any start up problems if I remove them?
Or just put a new Cat right after them?

No start up problems, and probably increased power and mileage when you remove them.

for emissions testing and reasons, yes you would put the new cat after them.
