Search first! Then make a thread.

Try mixing in a little rubbing alchohol with the gas (I forget exactly how much, but I THINK I used 1 pint for 1/4 tank. I passed emissions with flying colors simply by doing this, after failing miserably.

Also, make sure the engine is very warmed up!

smog test

What are the h/c readings at idle and 2500 rpm? If you have stock cats, they are probably not operating properly. Take the car th a good exhaust shop and have them test the cats, looking for inlet and outlet temps, outlet should be much higher after air induced and incineration process. rx7doctor

Get an Safc-2, hide it some place.. go dyno your car. tune it at 13 ish fuel ratio. you'll pass with flying colors! But if your cats are clogged then... you'll have some trouble.

Leaner can be better! just make sure your cats are clean.

once again, there can be no diagnosis until we see readings. most commonly however, the only reason to fail is either cats not warm, or acv non functional.

If your HCs are that high, I'd bet you have a blown motor or your ACV isn't working. Is it hard to start? Flood often? Get really lousy (15mpg or less) mileage? If yes, check compression. If not, check ACV operation. After failing a smog check w/over 850ppm at idle I fixed my ACV and put out 2ppm at idle...

The ACV is there to control the air going to the cat so you have the correct amount being fed for the conditions you're driving in. Too little and the cat can't do its job. Too much and the cat can overheat and melt down. IIRC, the split air pipe is an auxilliary input. I'm not sure that it can provide enough airflow by itself...
