canada sunroof seatbelt ?
heres another question that no one will be able to answer. except maybe someone from canada. or japan. I gutted my sunroof so that the motor, drain tray, and track is gone. i just bolt the panel in and take it out when i want. i needed more headroom for helmet. i would like to have the headliner stay in place better. I believe that there are different headliners for 89-91 sunroof cars that were NOT equipped with the auto seatbelts. I think this was the spec in canada?? the headliner would be wider because the autobelt track is not in the way. the A pillar trim and the rear upper trim are different for this reason too. anyone seen this or can confirm.

I can as well. But wasn't this item one of the two recall orders for second gens? The auto-seatbelts had some notice about they were supposed to be removed ... *checks*
Maybe I'm reading that wrong. Anyhow...
Recall 96V173000: Automatic Shoulder Belt Inoperative
The rail of the automatic shoulder belt can wear sufficiently such that the cable which retracts the buckle assembly will become jammed in the rail rendering the shoulder belt inoperative. In the event of a vehicle collision, the occupant would not be adequately restrained increasing the risk of personal injury.
Dealers will replace inoperative shoulder belts. Mazda has extended the warranty coverage on the driver and passenger automatic shoulder belt rail and motor for the life of the vehicle.
Owner Notification: Owner notification is expected to begin during October 1996.
Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500. Also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

Not "removed", replaced and made functional again.

As far as details go, IMO you're much better off keeping your stock (mousetrack) a-pillar and b-pillar trim.
The a-pillar trim mounts mostly to the mousetrack, and once that's removed you don't have the bracketry on the shell to mount the manual belt trim.
The stock (wider) trim can still be cobbled into place and hold fairly well.
When I converted from auto to manual belts I was (unpleasantly) surprised to see how different the trim pieces were and how extensive the mods would be to use them.
I kept all the stock S5 pieces and just trimmed them to fit the manual belts.
I didn't even try to deal with the headliner.

unfortunately for the sake of reattaching the trim(and not much else) the car has not had the srs for quite some time. did you actually have the a and b pillar trim from an 89-91 manual belt car, so you could test fit and see that the mounting points werent there? when i converted to manual belt on the pass. side the mounts for the pivot bolt and retractor mech. were all there. i hope that maybe the bracketry for the manual trims is just hiding or maybe brackets get attached to where the belt track used to go? ill checjk the parts manual and see if i can spot anything

Yes, all the mounts for the belts themselves are there, that's no problem. The manual belt retractor reel has the same bolt pattern as the motorized belt mechanism. The upper pivot hole is in place (albeit unused) in the mousetrack equipped chassis.
And yes, I did have the manual belt trim pieces to work with, but they won't fit.
The problem in the b-pillar area is that the motorized panels stick out further to accommodate the mechanism, so all the mount points are taller than the manual belt panels require.
This is not the only problem you'll run into.
The mount points for the manual belt clips are present on the tranny tunnel, so they'll bolt in- but removing the inertial reel from under the center console will leave a large area where the carpet has been cut away.
You'll have to figure out how to cover this up- it is visible- somehow.

damn. well thanks for the info. Sounds like ill need to look for a whole new car if i want to have everything perfect. haha. I wonder what 89-91 cars didn't come with the srs. Canada, uk and japan im guessing
