I tried this and it didnt fit. The bellhousing isnt deep enough to completely clear the stock flywheel. I am talking about an S4 engine and S3 trans. Not sure about an aftermarket flywheel.

You can put an FC front section on it. I've got an SA/FB tranny in my FC, it's got S4 front and tailshaft housings on it though.

It would have to be the bell housing from a turbo transmission, not an NA. The S4/S5 NA bell housings can't be unbolted.

I didn't say bellhousing, it's the whole front section that got swapped. More like the 1st gen gears were put in an FC tranny than the other way around.

I did this back in April because I finally broke my trans and had a 12A tranny laying around, so I used it. It worked for 8 months and now I need to do it all over again, but this time I'm going back to an s5.

Were the shorter gears noticeable? Always wondered if it would be faster acceleration wise with the 12A gearset.

The gears were definitely shorter than my old s5 tranny. My 5th gear went from a .697 to a .825. There were countless times when I was on the highway and would try to shift again but then realized that I was already in 5th. It was about 4k rpms at 80mph, which obviously made 5th gear much more responsive. It was nice to have shorter ratios for a change, and it seemed a bit faster, but I've never had a tranny wear out soo quickly, so I was forced to go easy on it practically the whole time it was in my car. 1st gear definitely made it alot more managable in traffic situations. The funny thing is that 5th felt the "loosest" gear of them all.---if I let off the throttle or did any throttle transitions, it would buck back and forth....the tranny just basically fell apart on me and it's just too weak, lol
