can you tell if timing is off by the look of a plug?

on my old n/a, which made 172rwhp, I advanced the crap out of the timing (ghetto style turning the CAS) on 87 and never had any detonation problems. it made a couple more HP on the dyno too, although it didn't idle as smoothly.

well if you advanced the timing i would say its off unless you have done other mods to your car that require you to advance the timing...

and from what i understand you cant check timing by spark plugs because doing a plug chop is for carb jetting

best thing to do would be to find your timing marks i believe there on the font housing and the pulleys check the FSM to make sure and use a timing light take some white out and put a white dot on the timing marks it will make them ezer to see when using the timing light on them

Aside from the oily carbon deposits, those plugs look fine.

You will know you are running into issues when you see the electrode start to lighten up in colour. If you see little bits eroded from the ceramic or electrode, then you know that the timing is too advanced, the mixture is too lean, or both.

but you'll never believe this but.....

MY TIMING WAS BANG ON!

i lined up the pin on the front cover at the 5 degree mark, then pulled out the CAS....

To my surprise the mating pin on the gear was dead on aligned with the dimple!!!!

MAD TIMING SKILLZ BIATCH!

im not joking, i should of recorded myself removing the CAS and zoom in on it being lined up perfectly
