Can a VIN be picked apart to tell what trim the car is?

This car is...umm...odd...

http://www.carfax.com/cfm/UUCP_ViewR...FX000007627047

The guy thinks/thought/something that it was a GXL, but it has no sunroof, power windows, adjustable headrests, or auto suspension. Don't know about the LSD yet. It does have 5 lugs and has power mirrors. There's no light on the outside door handle. Has storage boxes in back. It seems to have features from all the models, really.

So, can youpick a VIN apart to see what it was supposed to be? I'm thinking it was either a GXL or a Sport...

You can call Mazda Customer Support (1-800-222-5500). Give them the VIN number and they can cross-reference it with their database and tell you exactly what model the car is, and what factory options it shipped out with. They can also tell you the in-service date and the dealer ship that sold the car, plus any warranty work done on the car.

I did this with all 3 of my RX-7's before I purchased them, just to make sure I knew exactly what I was buying.
