can u update coils to better?

I have a 87 rx-7 just bought for a $100.00 nice shape and my first rotery moter, They guy said the moter is blown, I got it running pretty good with just new plugs but the trailing coil is no good, cand you update to a better coil or would it be better to stay with a stock one? the car has 120,000 and runs great on two plugs.

The stock ones are just fine and there's no need to upgrade them. You can buy a used coil for about $20-$25, check out http://www.rotaryresurrection.com.

Not unless that part of michigan has emission requirements (which I doubt) How's living under the bridge? (Hehe, I love making fun of trolls!) Anywho, since you have an 87, removing the cats will remove most of your backpressure, which will cause your auxilery ports not to open. You're going to have to rig them up so that they open and function properly with a free flowing exhaust (there's many threads on this, just search for "5th 6th port airpump" and you should find something)

Better for it to flow, rotary's like having open and free flowing exhaust. Anywho, I figured there weren't any emissions, I'm from Upper michigan (hence the troll joke), and we don't have any up there either, but I hear detroit enforces some. Sucks for them!

Get rid of the cats. If you need a coil and can't find one in a local junkyard, let me know. I have an 88 parts car at home. I can yank it off and it is all yours for $20 shipped. I know it worked cause I yanked the engine out of it for my car. Ran like a top before I did that.

is it hard to mess with the 5th and 6th ports for the exhaust if I leave the cats off?

well just gut the two pre-cats the main one controls them so leave that one alone. Untill you can get a presilencer from RB.

If the exhaust doesn't have enough back pressure, you just have to rig up a ball valve on the air pump to open them up for you. It's a fairly simple thing to do. (If you do go the presilencer way you don't have to worry as it is designed to still open them, but if you go the custom route you'll have to do as I stated above)

But since you got the car so cheap get yourself an MSD 6A it helps in fuel economy and hp, people say its not worth it but the star mazda race cars (small indy type cars with rotary engines) all have them so there must be some benift...
